Hello, and welcome to Creative Writing class at KEYS!

This is your first homework assignment, and it is designed to help you navigate your way to this homework blog so that you're sure to know how to use it once class starts on Thursday, 9/8.

(Please always read the homework assignments carefully, and be sure you have done all that is required of you!)

Each year, throughout the school year, I pray for each of my students by name.  I pray for you whenever the Lord brings you to mind, but I also pray for you systematically, one each on a particular day of each month throughout the year.  I make a list of things you have asked me to pray for you, and I do so regularly.

Your first assignment is as follows:
As soon as is practical, please email me with a list of things you'd like me to pray for you over the course of this year.  This list can include specific requests, but I would also like you to spend some time thinking of general things you'd like the Lord to do for you this year that I can be praying for you each month.

A sample list of the kinds of things you might send me appears below. (These are actual examples from previous student prayer emails I have received.)

* Pray that I would love the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength.
* Pray that I would stand firm in righteousness. I especially need strength to be honest all the time.
* Pray that I wouldn't be too concerned about my appearance.
* Pray that I would stop yelling at my siblings when I get angry at them. 
* Pray that I would be diligent in my school work and keep a good schedule.
* Pray that I would sleep better at night. 
* Pray that my dad would get the new job he applied for.
* Pray for my grandma (Joan) who has thyroid cancer and doesn't know the Lord, that she would get saved and be healed.

Please don't copy this list.  This is just an example to get you thinking.  Think of particular things that you would like prayer for, and send me those.  Your list should contain at least five (5) items.

I will cut-and-paste the list you give me into a prayer partner app I use on my iPad, and I will pray faithfully each month for the things you've asked me to pray for you. (The app is private and protected, so no one else will see your requests except me.) Of course, you may feel free to email me at any time to ask me to pray for other things as the school year goes along.

HW from Tuesday, 5/20/14

For Thursday, 5/22/14

1) Make all suggested corrections/revisions to the D1 of your story.  Save it, labeling the corrected version as  your D2.

2) "Select all" and make your paper single-spaced (preferably using 1.15 spacing).

3) Email the corrected, single-spaced story to me as an attachment to my regular email.  If it is sent before noon, you will receive extra credit for the D2.  It is due no later than 5:00 p.m.  At that time I will begin averaging your final grades and will not be able to receive any more papers to grade. 

(NOTE: If you feel you have some extenuating circumstances that require special consideration, please contact me via text or cell phone to discuss.)

4) Print a beautiful copy of your single-spaced story and place it in your envelope with all the other drafts and materials.  You must return that envelope with the corrected D2 in it to class tomorrow.

1) Have your parent proctor your take-home poetry test.  Take Part 1 first, then Part 2.  Do not look at Part 1 while you take Part 2.  In the envelope, include the answer sheet for Part 1, the answer sheet for Part 2, and the signed parent proctor letter.  Have your parent also sign across the seal of the sealed envelope. 

2) Write in your writer's notebook each day.  Time yourself and write for at least five minutes. You will turn in your writer's notebook next Tuesday, 5/20, to be skimmed over (but not carefully read) for credit.  I will return it on Thursday. 

3) Your May reading log will be due, signed, on next Tuesday, 5/20. 

4) Select a memory verse from among the following choices and make a memory card for it.  Bring your memory card to class on Tuesday. 
* 1 Peter 5:6-11
* Proverbs 2:1-6
* Romans 10:13-15
* Psalm 139:13-18
* Proverbs 6:16-19
* Colossians 3:12-14
* Colossians 3:15-17

1) Write in your writer's notebook each day.  Time yourself and write for at least five minutes. You will turn in your writer's notebook next Tuesday, 5/20, to be skimmed over (but not carefully read) for credit.

2) For all of the poems in your poetry packet, be sure you have a rhyme scheme and a rhythmic foot listed (i.e. ABAB, iambic).  You will need to figure out the rhythmic feet for the poems on the remaining three pages we didn't go over yesterday in class.

3) Your monthly blog post entry for May will be the poem you wrote for the HSLDA poetry contest.  Please type it up, email it to CWcomputerhelper@gmail.com, and turn in a hard copy to me in class tomorrow.

4) Your May reading log will be due, signed, by next Tuesday, 5/20.  If you didn't turn in (or resubmit) the signed reading logs for March or April, please do so tomorrow. 

5) You will have a take-home quiz on our poetry unit this weekend, which will be due next Tuesday, 5/20.  Be reviewing and studying everything we've covered so far with poetry.

1) Check the Student Writing Samples blog to see which items of yours are not yet posted and email the following items (well-labeled in the subject line with your name and what the attachment is) to CWcomputerhelper@gmail.com ASAP:

* "I Am" poem if not there yet—check first!

* Jan. blog post if not there yet—check first!

* Feb. blog post if not there yet—check first!

* final D2 of your mystery story

2) Write in your writer's notebook each day.  Time yourself and write for at least five minutes.  You are writing a second-person journal addressed to the Lord.  In second-person point of view, you will use first-, second-, and third-person pronouns as you write directly to someone—in this case, God—about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.  Feel free to make requests, as well.  This is almost like writing down your prayers.  Tell the Lord, and ask from Him, whatever you like. 
NOTE: These thoughts are private between you and God.  I will not read them but will only skim them enough to be sure you really are completing the assignment.  You should have at least five entries by the time you return to class on Tuesday. 

3) Your revised, corrected, proofread story (D1) is due Tuesday.   Late papers will be accepted after Tuesday but will lose points.  It is better to turn in your paper late than to turn it in before it is well-revised!

The following items will need to be in your envelope with your perfect-as-you-can-make-it D1:

1) Preliminary planning worksheet for your theme story.

2) Plot line chart for your theme story.

3) Printed Markup of the initial homework assignment you turned in (first 3 paragraphs of story).

4) Printed Markup of your graded G1 (first 4 pages of your story).

5) Printed Markup of your graded G2 (first 10 pages of your story).

6) Beautiful, printed copy of your corrected, proofread, edited, corrected, perfected D1 (entire story).

Please place the items in your envelope in that order (from bottom to top) so that the first thing I see when I pull out the whole pile is your D1 on top, with your preliminary planning worksheet on the bottom.

NOTE: If you haven't turned in or resubmitted your G2 yet, you must get it to me on Markup ASAP so I can grade it and you will still have time to revise it.  I have graded and returned all G2s that I have received into Markup.
