HW from 1/26/12

Due on 1/31/12:

* Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily. Your signed Reading Log is due on Tuesday!!

* Be prepared to recite your third Scripture memory verse (either Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32) at any time! Keep reviewing your first two verses (I Chronicles 29:11-14 and Philippians 4:4-8) as well. You will be expected to keep all memorized verses in your mind all year! Review one verse each day.

* Complete the chart of your plot line, identifying all key elements on the handout. You must fill this out entirely for Tuesday, whether your story is finished or not. Decide the main events that will be part of your rising action, plan what your climax/crisis will be, and think through your plan for the falling action. Identify all on the handout, to be turned in Tuesday.

* Proofread your paper! Consider carefully the suggestions made by your peer editor--your classmate is not a teacher and may have made incorrect suggestions! If you're not sure about something they suggested, check with your parent. Also, feel free to call me!

* Review the rules for correctly punctuating dialogue. (See pp. 468-469 in Writers Inc.) Many of you are still having trouble with this! Check all dialogue in your story to be sure it is correctly punctuated.

* From now on you will continue with your mystery story--adding two more full typed pages per homework day--until your story is completed satisfactorily. Your final story may end up being five pages long, or it may be fifteen or more. There is no specific length requirement, as long as it is correctly formatted, according to the criteria listed below, and the plot line is satisfying to the reader.

* This means you must add four pages to your story--or finish it--for Tuesday. (You have two homework days--Friday and Monday--between now and then.)

* When your story is complete and as perfect as you know how to make it (proofread carefully!) email it to me as an attachment entitled "Your name's mystery story D2" (ex. Laurie's mystery story D2).

CORRECT FORMAT FOR MYSTERY STORY:

+ Create a header that will put your name and the title of your story on the right top corner of each page. Do not skip any lines in this header.

+ Create a footer that will automatically number your pages in the center of the bottom of each page. Do not skip any lines in the footer.

+ Be sure your paper is in a word processing program and that it is double-spaced, with one-inch margins, using 12-point Times New Roman font. Do not have any sections of your paper written any larger or smaller than 12-point font.

+ On the blank line between scenarios, put three dashes, like this: ---

* Address all editing suggestions and make all corrections from graded copy (returned to you Thursday).

* Continue in your mystery story, correctly alternating scenarios, until you have at least four full typed pages (as correctly formatted, according to above criteria). I don't mean four MORE pages, just a total of at least four pages from where you started after Cathy's scenario. I also don't mean you need to finish the story. Just continue until you have at least four total pages.

* Email the (at least) four pages to me as an attachment.

* If you receive a return email from me indicating I printed your paper, you don't need to bring a printed copy to class. If you do NOT receive an email from me, you must print your paper and bring it to class. These four pages will constitute your D1 (draft 1) grade, and they are due by Tuesday.

* Finish memorizing your third Scripture memory verse (either Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32). You must be prepared to recite it any time beginning on Tuesday.

* Decide if you will continue with Cathy's scenario or draw a line and go to David or Richard. Whichever way you choose, write the next two complete scenarios. Type them up, double-spaced, using 12-point font. Do NOT make a full line between scenarios! Just put three dashes like this:
---

* Email it to me as an attachment. Please do this as early as possible so I can print it and get it graded before class Thursday.

* Copy the following verses about God's Word, identifying and labeling any similes or metaphors you see:

"My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching. Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light..."

HW from 1/12/12

Due on 1/17/12:

* Reading for Reading Log: 30 minutes daily. Write it down on your Reading Log!

* Brainstorm the following things. You will write down (in an organized fashion that is easy to follow) 3-5 brainstormed ideas for each of the following "big questions" that have been set up in the mystery story.

+ the thing in his pocket?
+ "creatures"?
+ what are they up to?
+ David's discovery?
+ what does letter say?
+ what will (worried) Richard do?

* Decide if you will continue with Cathy's scenario or draw a line and move to one of the other two. If you plan to change from Cathy's, decide which one you will go to. At the bottom of your pages of brainstormed ideas, write that down (as a name), along with what will be happening in that scenario when you continue/start it.

* If you have not yet done so, be prepared to recite your first two Scripture memory verses--1 Chronicles 29:11-13 and Philippians 4:4-8--anytime.

* Work on your third Scripture memory verse (either Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32). Make your Scripture memory card (or equivalent) if you haven't already. We will begin reciting these verses next week.

* Pray for Caitlyn, who hurt her ankle on an elliptical machine but would like to be able to play soccer this weekend.

* Those of you who received a zero on the homework assignment from your Writer's Inc. book must still complete the work. Please complete the assignment and bring it to class! Zeroes are not permitted in my class, and all work must be completed. I will not tolerate students who simply decide not to complete assignments.
