HW from Monday, 10/24/22

We missed class on Thursday, 10/20/22 due to my injury. Then you came to class unprepared, without your homework completed, on Monday, 10/24.

Still incomplete from previous assignments:
1)  PLEASE DO THIS!! We need dividers to organize your materials!
Get all of the materials that are listed on the handout entitled "Class Supply List for Creative Writing"—purchased and organized. Bring them to class for our next class meeting, and each class meeting thereafter.

2) Save the link to the homework blog as a favorite or bookmark on your computer. Get help from a parent or friend, and call me if you can't figure it out.

3) Read all of pp.125-126 in your Writer's Inc. book. The sections are entitled "Writing with Style" and "Key Stylistic Reminders."

New assignments from today (Monday, 10/24):

3) Complete Copywork #3.

4) Complete penmanship practice.

5) Complete the items listed below in the "Also, daily" section!

Also, daily:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log  as you go along—in multiples of 5, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The October Reading Log is due on Monday, October 31.

+ Print out each homework blog entry, check off each assignment as your complete it, and have your parent sign the completed, printed sheet. Bring it to class each day.

+ Be on the lookout for any errors you see in print anywhere! Grammatical errors, spelling errors, mistakes of any kind. Take a picture or bring me the print material where you saw the error, for extra credit!

1) Read all of pp.125-126 in your Writer's Inc. book. The sections are entitled "Writing with Style" and "Key Stylistic Reminders."

2) Write three descriptive sentences—using the five ways we have learned to enhance description—following the models we did previously with the sentences <The man walked.> and  <The child cried.> This time, write one each for a farmer, a banker, and a baker. 

3) Complete the items listed below in the "Also, daily" section!

+ Figure out what's going on with your email, making sure that you are receiving the emails I am sending you.

New assignments from today (Thursday, 10/13):
1) Read all of pp.130-131 in your Writer's Inc. book. The section is entitled "Using Strong, Colorful Words."

2) Write the two good sentences I asked for. That is, write more descriptive sentences—using the five ways we learned to enhance description—following the model we did together in class with the sentence <The man walked.> You will do one more example of <The man walked.> and also write one for <The child cried.>

3) Complete Copywork #2 as instructed on the handout.

4) Complete your penmanship practice on the lined paper I gave you. Practice writing perfectly formed letters and words using a lowercase g, d, and p.

1) Get all of the materials that are listed on the handout entitled "Class Supply List for Creative Writing"—purchased and organized. Bring them to class for our next class meeting, and each class meeting thereafter.

2) Select your first Reading Log book, if you haven't already, begin recording your reading on the Reading Log. You are aiming for an average of 30 minutes per school day (M-F), but you may read and record your reading from any days of the week or weekend. Remember, you must record your reading in round multiples of five (rounded down), and your parent must initial each day to indicate that you did the reading and recorded it accurately.

3) Send me an email—from your own email account if you have one, or from the parental email you will be using for our class correspondence, if not—before our next class meeting on Thursday. NOTE: Whenever you send me an email, write your name, CW, and the subject/name of the assignment in the subject line. You will be graded this time on whether you do this correctly in this email.

4) Memorize the following list of your five senses—look, smell, taste, sound, feel—using those exact words in that exact order. Be abler to recite it quickly when prompted.

5) Read all of p.141 in your Writer's Inc. book—the sections entitled #4 ("Hooking Your Reader") and #5 ("Keeping the Reader Interested"), including the boxes containing the sections "Use sensory details," "Use specific action," and "Use dialogue." (NOTE: I'm not certain that you have the correct edition of the Writer's Inc. book. It the page numbers here are not correct, let me know in a text or email and I will scan and send you a copy of the correct pages.)

6) Also read p. 148, entitled "Sample Personal Narrative" (called "The Game").
