HW from Tuesday, 11/29/16

Due on Thursday, 12/1/16

1) The November Reading Log is due, signed by a parent, at the start of class on this Thursday, 12/1/16.

2) Over the week of the Thanksgiving holiday, hopefully you spent some time thinking about things that you are thankful for and praising God for His goodness to you. If not, that's okay. But either way, I'd like you to make a list of as many things as you can think of that you are thankful for regarding your parents. Your list must contain at least ten items. Really give this some thought, and list specific things you are grateful for about your parents.

3) Finish the exercises on the handout we worked on in class, which contains an original (single-spaced) paragraph from the novel Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. The subsequent three paragraphs contain the same paragraph, double-spaced to allow you room to circle the words that must be changed and to alter the paragraph in the way indicated.

Follow the underlined directions before each paragraph. You have already done the first one, and we went over it together in class. The second one we worked with a little bit in class. The third one you will need to do on your own for homework.

Circle each word that must be changed and then write the correct word above the circle. You may write directly on the handout. Be sure you have this ready to turn in at the beginning of class on Thursday.

NOTE: If you did not turn in your Markup copy or your beautiful final draft of your character sketch (or both), remember to bring it tomorrow!

Also, daily:
+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for at least 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log (in multiples of five, rounded down) as you go along.

+ Write in your Gratitude Journal, aiming for three things but listing at least one thing you are thankful for daily. When you have done so, place a check mark in the top corner of your Reading Log calendar for that day.

The December Reading Log is due, signed by a parent, on Tuesday, 1/3/17.

HW from Thursday, 11/17/16

Due BEFORE Tuesday, 11/29/16
1) Please pray today and tomorrow for my surgery tomorrow morning (Friday, 11/18)!
I report at 6 a.m. for a 7:30 surgery that lasts about an hour. I will be in recovery for another hour or so. It should all be over by 9 or 9:30. Thanks for prayers for a safe, effective procedure and for a quick recovery, so that I can enjoy the Thanksgiving break with my kids who are home from college!

2) Today (Thursday) or tomorrow (Friday): Email the corrected, double-spaced draft of your character sketch (which you've already printed and turned in to me) as an attachment to my Markup address! Please do this ASAP, today or tomorrow, so I will have it this weekend to mark it up and send it back to you during this break week.

3) I will send your marked up copy back to you sometime during the break week.

4) On Thursday, 11/24, have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING with your family!

5) On or before Monday, 11/28, please print the Markup copy I returned to you and make all the suggested corrections that I indicated to you on your character sketch. There probably won't be many, since this is the third time it's been proofed.

6) After you've done all the corrections, make the document single-spaced, give it a creative title, save it again as a separate draft, and email it to me as an attachment at my regular address. Also print a copy and bring it to class on Tuesday, 11/29/16—together with the Markup copy you printed.

Your final document should:

* Be single spaced

* Have our standard (single-spaced) header at the top with:
Name: Your name here
Date Due: 11/29/16
Title: Character Sketch Final
Word Count: ??? (your word count here)

* Have a blank (skipped) line after the header, then have your clever title for your paper (centered), then skip another line before the body of your paper begins. The body of your paper on this final draft will be single-spaced so I can post it on our website.

* Be set to print a page number on the bottom of each page  except the first page(i.e. It should be in the footer, but please deselect "show page number on first page" such that your page number will only appear beginning with page 2. When I download your paper, I will be able to see if you have it set up to place an automatic page number in the footer even though it isn't putting "Page 1" on the first page.)

7) Don't forget to read, read, read during the break, and mark your Reading Log!

The November Reading Log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, 12/1/16.

HW from Tuesday, 11/15/16

Due on Thursday, 11/17/16

1) Give your notebook some attention—again! Place all items that need to be hole punched in the outside pocket, but everything else should be filed away in the correct section. I will finally give you a homework grade for your beautifully organized notebook in class on Thursday. (Really!)

2) Show your grade card to your parents, making sure they note the things that I said you may still need to brush up on (in the comment section). Have them sign and return the report card.

NOTE: I will file your report card from each quarter in your Writing Folder, where I'm also keeping your papers—and which I'll give you at the end of the year.

3) Make sure your Reading Log calendar is up to date and that you're getting it signed as you go along. Do not forget that you are supposed to be reading each weeknight for at least 30 minutes in order to get full credit.

4) Also make sure your Gratitude Journal is up to date and that you're writing 1-3 things you're thankful for every day. Today, write down at least five things you're thankful for about your parents.

5) Bring your Gratitude Journal to class with you on Thursday. (After you write your five things, put it in your bag so you do not forget it!)

6) Visit the following links. Watch the video here and read the article here. They are about making your bed and keeping a clean room, respectively. (Yes, I'm serious! "What do 'making my bed' and 'cleaning my room' have to do with creative writing?" you might ask. Go visit the links and then come back and we'll talk...)

7) Go make your bed and clean your room. (Yes, I'm serious! Trust me. You'll thank me!) Get your room as tidy and cleaned up as your schedule will allow tonight.

8) Have your parent sign a paper that indicates that you made your bed, and either that you tidied up your room and it looks great, or that you didn't have time to clean up your room yet but that you will do so at your first possible opportunity before the weekend.

Due on Thursday, 11/10/16

1) Complete the second draft (D2) of your character sketch, using both the red copy of the D1 that I returned to you in class today and the

2) Print the beautiful, corrected copy of your D2 and attach it to the front of the D1 packet of your character sketch. You will turn this in as soon as you walk into class on Thursday.

2) Carefully read over pp. 151-156 in your Writers Inc book, taking notes about anything that strikes you as important. Write down the four "patterns of fiction" that are described on p.153, giving the name and a short definition (in your own words) of what it means.

HW from Thursday, 11/3/16

Due on and before Tuesday, 11/8/16

1)
I have emailed you a copy of a chart I'd like you to download and complete. Use it to type out a copy of your KEYS schedule for me, telling me where you are during each block on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This way, if I need to find you at some point during the day for some reason, I can. Once you've filled in the chart, save it and email it to me as an attachment at my regular email address by Monday at noon.

2) Get your notebook in perfect order. Make sure that all of your papers are filed correctly—in the proper section, in chronological order. (There should be no unfiled papers stuffing the side pockets of your binder!!) Also, refill your stash of blank notebook paper so you have plenty. Make sure everything is ready to go for the start of Quarter 2 next week. I will give you your first homework grade by looking at your beautifully organized notebook in class on Tuesday.

3) Slowly and carefully read over the handout I gave you entitled Working with Point of View (1st & 3rd Person – Verses). This will help you with the next assignment.

4) Complete the handout I emailed you entitled Practice with Point of View – Bible Verses. Follow the directions carefully. You will turn this in on Tuesday.

The November Reading Log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, 12/1/16.

HW from Tuesday, 11/1/16

Due on Thursday, 11/3/16

1) Print a copy of the beautiful, single-spaced final draft of your descriptive setting, which you emailed to me last weekend and which I posted on the Student Writing Samples blog. Staple it to the top of all your Descriptive Setting drafts; you will turn in the entire paper (all the drafts of your descriptive setting, stapled together) on Thursday. Get it ready and put it in your notebook now so you don't forget it!

2) Finish the handout we did in class—the one using the story Put Me in the Zoo and which began, "Below are some sentences adapted from the text..."—by translating the bottom section (below the dotted line) from first-person to third-person point of view. Follow the directions on the handout carefully, and call the assignment Translate POV when you prepare it hot dog-bun style to turn it in.)

[NOTE: I have emailed you a copy of the handout so that, if you choose, you may cut and paste the paragraph into your own Word document and easily make the changes right there. If you choose this option, please give your paper a proper heading (in a header) and make your paper double-spaced, for ease of grading. You will then just print it out and turn it in on Thursday. Do not email it to me.]

3) If you are in CWA, I neglected to get your October Reading Log from you, and I didn't give you a November Reading Log. Be prepared to turn in your signed October Reading Log on Thursday, and keep track of today's and Wednesday's reading (and the gratitude journal checks) on your own paper until you can get a new Reading Log on Thursday.

4) Study for a final Quarter 1 quiz on everything we've studied so far. Use the study guide I gave you today (entitled Creative Writing – First Quarter Review) to make sure you're prepared. We will take the quiz in class on Thursday; be sure you know it backwards and forwards and are prepared to work quickly!
