HW from Thursday, 12/13/18

Due on Tuesday, 12/18/18

1) Print another beautiful copy of your thankfulness essay D2—the one you wrote all over today while changing it to 2ndperson point-of-view—and staple it to the top of your paper packet to turn in on Tuesday. BEFORE YOU DO SO, however, carefully remove the one you changed to 2ndperson today.

2) Using the 2ndperson one you wrote today, make the changes in your typed D2. FIRST THING, open the document and save a new copy called “Thankfulness Essay – 2ndperson.” (Choose the “save as” function in MS Word.) THEN change the words you need to in order to make it read like a letter in 2ndperson. Open with “Dear Mom and Dad” (or whatever you call them) and sign it “Love, ____” (using your name).

3) Following the sample I gave you today—and your Essay Planning Worksheet—write your first meaningful verse essay. You will turn this in next Thursday, the last day before break, but I’d like you to write it this weekend if at all possible so you won’t be scrambling to complete it next Tuesday with the other homework.

4) Do some extra reading in your Reading Log book if you have any extra time. This is a tricky month with all the days off.

Due on Thursday, 12/13/18

1) Make all suggested corrections and revisions to the D1 of your thankfulness essay. Be sure to follow all guidelines for written compositions as found on the right sidebar of this homework blog. Print the beautiful D2 and staple it to the top of your paper packet to turn in on Thursday.

2) Slowly and carefully complete the handout we worked on together today—the one with the excerpts from Catching Fire—being careful to change the point of view of each original paragraph as indicated on the handout. Just draw a line through the word that needs to be changed and rewrite the new word above it.

3) Do some extra reading in your Reading Log book if you have any extra time. This is a tricky month with all the days off.

Go ahead and get started on...

Partial Homework from Tuesday, 12/4/18

Hello! I am going to have to revamp the remaining days of lessons between now and our Christmas break to be sure we cover certain material before then. I will update this blog fully—with all assignments for Tuesday—by Wednesday at noon. For now, please revise and perfect your character sketch, which was returned today, and prepare your perfect D3 and paper packet to turn in on Tuesday.

Return here by noon on Wednesday for the rest. And I will send a text and email once it's updated.

HW from Thursday, 11/29/18

Due on Tuesday, 12/4/18

1) Print out this homework blog entry and check off each item as you complete it. Have your parent sign the paper indicating they’ve checked that you’ve thoroughly completed all the assignments.

2) Please visit this webpage to read about hyphens, en dashes, and em dashes.
Mentally complete the four practice questions included at the end, and make sure you understand the correct answers.

3) Remember to bring your signed report card to class on Tuesday if you didn’t bring it today. I only need the blue one. The white Student Grade Report is for your parent(s) to keep for their use in assisting you at home. Feel free to call me—or have your parent(s) contact me—if you have any questions about the suggestions on the Student Grade Report.

[Please note the em dashes I used in the sentence above! Be sure you understand why and how they were used.]

4) Complete the assignment from the bottom paragraph of the handout we worked with today—the Put Me in the Zoo one—underneath what you already wrote in your writer’s notebook today. Just draw a line and write the last paragraph, translating it to third person as you did before. (These are different directions than those appearing on the handout itself. Please follow these directions!)

[Please note the em dashes I used in the sentence above! Be sure you understand why and how they were used.]

5) I will send a class email containing a copy of the handout I gave you called “Practice with Point of View – Bible Verses.” This contains Bible verses to be changed from third person to first person. This is so you can copy and paste the Bible passages into your own document and easily make the changes there. Follow the directions on the handout.

[Please note the en dash being used as a separator in that title! When en dashes are used as spacers/separators, you DO put spaces around them as I did above. When used to mean “through” in inclusive numerical expressions, there are NOT spaces on either side of them.]

6) Please make all suggested revisions to your season essays. Name this draft “Season Essay – D3” and staple the beautiful revised copy on top of your existing stack.

[Please note the en dash being used as a separator in that title! Be sure you understand how and why it was used.]

7) If you have already started out this second quarter with excuse papers—you know who you are!—please complete all work that is now overdue and bring it with you to class on Tuesday.

[Please note the em dashes I used in the sentence above! Be sure you understand why and how they were used.]

8) Please note the em dashes used below, in the “Also, daily” section of our homework blog. These have been there all along, but you probably noticed and understood them better this time. You may now add em dashes to your list of items you may find in print and bring in for extra credit—along with any grammatical errors or examples of figurative language you find in print. You may not count the em dash I just used, however. J)

HW from Thursday, 11/15/18

COMPLETE before this weekend, 11/18/18
TURN IN upon your return on  Tuesday, 11/27

1) I know I told you there would be no homework over break—and it is truly my intention for you to have all next week off with your family—so please do the following assignment before the weekend.

I have changed my mind from what I initially told you. I do want you to write this paper now, while all the information is fresh in your mind—and before you take a week off!

2) If you didn’t already take it, take the proctored take-at-home Quarter 1 Test as soon as possible today or tomorrow..

3) Complete the following according to your class:

CWA: Complete the Essay Planning Worksheet (EPW) by writing the rest of the opening sentences and the concluding sentence for your essay topics before you continue. (CWB was able to finish this during class today, as planned.)

CWA & CWB: Type a first draft of your thankfulness essay using your completed EPW (Essay Planning Worksheet).  Call it “Thankfulness Essay D1” and be sure you follow our guidelines for typed compositions. (See right sidebar of this blog.)

4) Print out a copy of your D1. Over the course of the next week and a half until I see you again, have an adult besides one of your parents proofread your paper. Make the corrections they suggest.

5) Bring the whole packet to class on the Tuesday after break, stapled bottom to top as follows: brainstorm sheet, EPW, proofread D1, corrected D1.

Please, please, please complete this today or tomorrow, so you can enjoy next week off, with no thought for our classwork.  Read your book for pleasure whenever you can, however. Daily, if possible. Always. For the rest of your life.

ENJOY YOUR BREAK! :)

HW from Tuesday, 11/13/18

Due on Thursday, 11/15/18

1) Brainstorm a list of at least 20 things you are thankful for about your parents. These can be things about both of them together, or things about just your mother or just your father. Just quickly brainstorm as many things as you can think of, but at least 20.

2) Study your list and see which of the things you’re thankful for seem to organize themselves into like categories. Mark all the things that seem similar in some way with one color or symbol. Mark some other things that seem similar in a different way, a different color. Do this until many of your brainstormed items have fallen into three separate categories. Note that every item you brainstormed doesn’t have to be in one of the three categories.

3) Be prepared to turn this list and your categories in on Thursday.

4) Have your parent send me an email to request that I send you your Quarter 1 test once you are ready to take it. I will email the test to them, then you will complete it in one hour—before class on Thursday if you don’t want homework over the Thanksgiving break. If you don’t request and complete the test before Thursday, you will have to do so over the break.

HW from Thursday, 11/8/18 (Westley's birth day—literally!)

Due on Tuesday, 11/13/18

Please forgive the tardiness of this posting! I have been doing this since I last saw you:

I was on "labor support" duty after I left you on Thursday, until Westley Markus Furbish was born at 4-something that afternoon. (Hooray!! Thanks for your prayers!)

Since then I’ve been on "watch Teddy" duty while Evie and Ronald and the baby were still in the hospital. Now, the little family has come home, and I’m on "take care of everybody" duty. J

I’m loving every minute, though, and trying to grade some of your papers in the in-between times! Before I see you again on Tuesday, please complete the following:

1) Organize your notebook. File all papers out from any side pockets or other folders. (Your returned homework can either go all together in the back of the “Notes” tab, or all together in the back of the “Handouts” tab.) I will check it for a homework grade on Tuesday.

2) Be prepared for a quiz on all the material from the Quarter 1 Review Sheet. Study and review your notes!

NOTE: Because of the pictures, you do not have to print out this entry. But be sure you've completed both of the items above by Tuesday. See you then!

Also, daily:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The November Reading log is due on Thursday, November 29.

HW from Tuesday, 11/6/18

Due on Thursday, 11/8/18

1) Complete the first quarter review sheet. Fill in as much as you can without looking at your notes. The things you have to look up in your notes, write in a different color ink or something, so you’ll know what you need to study. Be prepared for a test on this information at any time. This review sheet is for you to study, though, and is not itself graded.

2) Complete the handout practicing identifying figurative language. Follow the directions, circling S, M, P, and/or N for each example.

3) Type out the conversations we worked on today in class—the homework I returned to you today, with the six dialogues—taking care to punctuate all conversations correctly. Pay attention to capitalization, quotation marks, commas, end punctuation, changing paragraphs, and all elements of correctly punctuated dialogue. You will receive a grade on the accuracy of this punctuation.

NOTE: You should make one double-spaced document, skipping an extra line between each of the conversations. At the end, please write one short conversation of your own (the seventh one), with three different speakers each speaking at least twice.

HW from Thursday, 11/1/18

Due on Tuesday, 11/6/18

1) Complete your brainstorming page that we started in class today about the person you will write your character sketch about before you start writing the paper itself.

2) Also read the following entirely before writing your character sketch! (Print a copy of this post at this point. There's a lot of information here!)

Content Requirements:

* Your character sketch is a description of a real person you know. Do not tell a story! You are writing a description, using all the ways you've learned to enhance description in your writing.

(These seven ways to enhance description should be becoming second nature to you by now: think of your five senses (sensory details)... add adjectives and adverbs... use more descriptive nouns and exciting verbs... add phrases... use figurative language...)

* Your character sketch must have at least two examples of figurative language. In your first typed draft, underline and highlight your examples of figurative language, and identify whether they are simile, metaphor, and/or personification.

* Your character sketch must also have at least one correctly punctuated line of dialogue (or monologue) in it. Be creative with how you work this in. Underline and highlight the line(s) of dialogue in your first typed draft as well. It is fine if your character has a brief conversation with someone, but make sure the conversation reveals something about your character.

Procedure:

1) Complete your character sketch. Your initial draft may be typed or handwritten—it is up to you. Either way, be sure it is double-spaced so that you will have room to make corrections as you proofread.

NOTE: Your character sketch should contain at least 250 words, but no more than 500 words.

2) YOU proofread your paper first, circling any errors you find. Go back and make any corrections or changes, then type your paper according to the guidelines for typed compositions that appear on the right sidebar of this blog. Save this first draft after you've proofread it.

3) Hand a clean, printed, double-spaced copy of the paper that you fixed and typed, to a parent or other adult. Have them mark their suggestions for improvement directly on your typed draft then have them sign the paper to indicate they proofread it. Save this proofread draft as well.

4) Make the corrections suggested by your proofreader if you agree with their assessment. If not, explain why you didn't use the suggestions by writing an explanation directly on the typed, proofread draft.

5) Print your beautiful, corrected draft. Staple it on top of the other two, with the very first draft you proofread under that and the brainstorm/planning sheet on the bottom. You will turn in this entire stack of papers on Tuesday. Have it ready to turn in at the beginning of class.

Formatting Requirements:

* Make sure the header is correctly formatted to automatically repeat on each page of your document. You should only need to type it once, if it is a true header.

The header format is as follows:

Laurie Sitterding (Use your name!)
11/6/18 (This is the due date.)
Character Sketch, D1 (This is the assignment title.)
Word Count: 263 (Use your actual word count!)

* DO NOT count your words! Word (and any other word processing program) will keep track of the number for you. [If you look in the bottom left corner of your Word document, it will tell you how many words your document is. If you are using a different word processing program, search your help files for how to find this information.]

* Make sure the footer is correctly formatted to automatically number the pages, and place a page number on the bottom center of each page past the first one. (Your first page won't have a page number.)

* All other formatting requirements are listed in the right sidebar of this blog, including margins, font size, etc. See Guidelines for Typed Compositions.

If you have any questions about how to do any of these things and your family members have not been able to help you, call or text me. I am happy to help.

Also, daily:
+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The October Reading log is due on Thursday, November 29.

+ Continue to print out each homework blog entry, check off each assignment as you complete it, and have your parent sign the completed, printed sheet. Bring it to class each day.
