* Your first composition is not a story but a descriptive paper about a particular place.  Choose the place you would like to describe in your descriptive composition. Do not start writing your paper!  Just choose the place and then complete the following exercise:

* Write 3 good, descriptive sentences for each of the five areas represented by your five senses.  In other words, write 3 descriptive sentences about how your place looks.  Then write 3 descriptive sentences each about how it smells, tastes, sounds, and feels.  [This will be fifteen sentences in all.]

* Choose a common, boring verb.  Make a list of as many more-exciting, descriptive verbs you can think of to replace that common, boring one.  (Your list must contain at least 10.)

* Do the same thing with a common, dull noun.  Your list of alternate nouns must contain at least 5.  You may put both lists on the same sheet of paper to turn in on 9/20/11.
