HW from 2/28/13

Due on 3/5/13:

* Finish your Haiku assignment.  (See handout.)  All three illustrated poems and the draft with your proofreaders' signatures on it are due Tuesday.

* Review the elements of narration in preparation for the next story you will be writing.  Be ready for a quiz on the elements of narration (especially the most recent one studied, plot) on Tuesday.

* Be thinking about the next story you want to write.  Specifically, consider:

- What theme might you like to illustrate?

- Which point of view will you write in (first or third person)?
NOTE: Third person is much more common and much easier to do well.

- Will you write in past or present tense?
NOTE: Past tense is much more common and much easier to do well.

ALSO:
Reading for Reading Log: 30 minutes daily. (Reading Log is usually due, signed by parent, at the end of the month.  This month it will be due on Thursday, March 28--the last day before Spring Break.)

Determine which is your favorite and cut & paste it into a Word document.  Beneath it, compose a well-written paragraph indicating at least three reasons you appreciate the poem you chose.  Place your name and the date in the upper right-hand corner of the header.  Print it and bring it to class on Tuesday.

HW from 2/19/13

Due on 2/19/13:

NOTE: Today, you will be sending me an email with THREE things in it.  Please do not send me the email until you have all three things ready to send at once.  Thanks!  See below for the particulars...

* Revise your springboard poem, addressing all errors noted on the paper I returned to you.  Once you have revised it, email a perfect copy to me, together with your vote for your favorite gerund poem and your song lyrics. (See details below.)

* Link to the Student Writing Samples site (see left sidebar) and read your classmates' gerund poems.  When you send me an email with your revised springboard poem, also indicate which gerund poem is your favorite and send your song lyrics.  (These are under the heading "A Window Inside" on the Student Writing Samples blog.)

* Choose lyrics to a song that demonstrates a clear rhyme scheme (rhyming pattern), similar to those we looked at yesterday in class.  Be sure you type it up in such a way that the rhyming words appear clearly at the ends of the lines and the rhyming pattern is apparent--but you don't need to analyze the rhyme scheme of the poem and write the A-B-C letters on there!) Email this as a separate attachment when you email your springboard poem and your vote for favorite gerund poem.  (See details below.)

DETAILS: Please tell me in the body of your email which was your favorite gerund poem.  Please send the other two things (your song lyrics and your springboard poem) as two separate Word attachments.

Bring all three of your memory verse cards to class on Thursday (Psalm 141:3, Titus 2:11-14, and Ephesians 4:29-32).  You will begin reciting your second memory verse next Tuesday.

* Work to finish your mystery story.  A complete draft (D1) between 5 and 25 pages will be due for all of you by Tuesday of next week.  Please proofread it and make this draft as perfect as you know how to make it.  (NOTE: Most of you have already turned in this D1.)

HW from 2/14/13

Due on 2/19/13:

* Make every effort to finish your mystery story by Tuesday!  You must add at least 5 pages by Tuesday if you are not finished.

NOTE: Once your story is logically finished in a way that is pleasing to you, you do not need to add any more pages.  (Duh!)  Your finished story must be more than 5 full pages but no more than 25 full pages when completed.  Refer to the grading rubric Evie gave you for information about how your story will be graded.

* Make a new memory card (or fighter verse app entry) for the other memory verse on the handout I gave you.  You will now be memorizing whichever of the two verses you did not already memorize (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32).  Bring all three verse cards to class on Tuesday (including Psalm 141:3 from last quarter).

* Watch for an email from me regarding your springboard poem.  You will be asked either to email it to me (if it needs no revision) or to revise it and then email it to me before Monday.  I will be sending you instructions once I grade them. Due to a stomach virus at our home, I did not get this to you in a timely manner.  I will return the papers to you in class on Tuesday.  If you have not turned in or emailed a springboard poem, please do so.

* On Monday, link into the Student Writing Samples site (see left sidebar) and read your classmates' poems.  Send me an email on Monday indicating which is your favorite in each categoryAgain, I don't feel that I have these up in a timely enough manner for you to vote on them yet.  I will post them all today and you can read them and vote on them later.
