HW from 1/16/14

Due on Tuesday, 1/21/14

1.  Complete the empty chart I gave you for the plot line of your story. This will be a loose outline without a lot of details, but it should contain several examples of complications you plan to include in the story, what you intend the climax to be, and how you plan to wrap up the story.  You will turn this in to me on Tuesday.

2.  After you have completed your chart (of the plot line) and have a sense of where it is going, continue with your mystery story, adding vignettes (separated by 3 asterisks) until you have at least 5 full double-spaced typewritten pages.  This will be your G1 (the first graded part) for this paper.

3.  Proofread your story so far.  (These five pages are your G1, even though the story is not necessarily finished.)  Make sure there are no errors that you can find.

4.  Print your five pages and have someone who is not a current Creative Writing student proofread your story, writing their suggestions for improvement directly on the copy you printed out.  Have them sign the top of the first page, near your header, to indicate that they proofread it and made note of any errors they found.

5.  Make the necessary changes that your proofreader suggested.

6.  Email the proofread, corrected copy of your five pages to me at my Markup address before Tuesday.

PLEASE NOTE (FAQs):

+  There is no fixed length requirement for your completed mystery story.  You must accomplish everything that is listed on the grading rubric I gave you for the mystery story, and you must do so within 5-25 pages.  In other words, your story must be at least 5 full typewritten pages, and it may not be any longer than 25 full typewritten pages, when it is finally finished.

+ You must use standard 12-point font (Times or Arial), standard 1-inch margins, standard paragraph indentions, and standard double-spacing for your paper.  Do not attempt to meet the various length requirements as we go along by making the paper "look longer" (or "look shorter"!) by adjusting your margins, changing your font, increasing or decreasing your font size, etc.

+ You are only required to add as much to your story for Tuesday as is listed above for the G1 (five full typewritten pages).  However, if you want to write more, you may do so.

+ You may add, delete, or change things in your plan for your story at any time as you go along.

+ You are not "locked in" to what you put on your plot line chart.  That chart is to assist you in thinking through and planning out your story.  Don't feel bound by it.

+ You may call, text, or email me any time with questions.  If I don't respond right away, I will do so as soon as possible.  Don't be afraid to try again if you don't hear from me in a timely fashion or if you're still confused.

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The January reading log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, January 30, 2014.

+ Review daily the material from our writing and grammar lessons in class so that you can more easily learn and memorize (as we go along) the different things we are studying.  Be ready for a quiz anytime on all that we've learned so far.

HW from 1/14/14

Due on Thursday, 1/16/14

1.  Correct the two vignettes I sent you back from Markup.  Make sure the format for the paper is correct in every way and that you have revised and corrected your story as suggested.  You may add more vignettes if you would like to, but you do not need to for tomorrow.

2.  Print a copy of the two corrected vignettes (and any others you may have chosen to add). Staple it (and the Markup copy, if you printed it) with the grading sheet I gave you yesterday.  Be sure your name is showing on the grading sheet and that you have it ready to turn in at the start of class tomorrow.

3.  Study for a test tomorrow.  It may contain information from any time this year, but it will primarily focus on the materials learned during the second quarter.  Be sure to review your notes on:

* point of view (including first-, second-, and third-person)
* consistency and agreement regarding tense (past or present), number (singular or plural), and gender (male or female)
* correctly punctuating dialogue
* avoiding sentence fragments and run-on sentences
* understanding the differences between frequently confused homonyms: its/it's; there/their/they're; to/too/two; hear/here; wear/where/were; etc.

NOTE: You may find it helpful to visit the class website and look over the items listed under Topics of Study (Q.1 and Q.2) in the left sidebar.  (We have not yet studied foreshadowing/suspense, so you won't be responsible for that.)

HW from 1/9/14

Due ON and BEFORE Tuesday, 1/14/14

1.  Continue to be thinking about the mystery story and deciding what you think is going on.  What has happened in this story--and what is going to happen in this story--according to you, who will continue it?

Brainstorm at least three different possible situations about what you think could be going on in the story.  In each of the three different situations indicate: (1) who the people he called "creatures" are, (2) what David's involved in  (3) what his note to his mother said, and (4) what his plan is.
NOTE: These will be three totally different ideas about what's going on in the story.  You will turn this in on Tuesday in class.  (Label each situation well.)

2.  After you have completed #1, decide which of the three ideas you came up with (in #1) that you'd like to go with.  Then decide what you want the next vignettes to be. You have four options at this point:

A) You could continue with the Cathy vignette since no line was drawn. [She is on the couch in her living room going through her bag with the letter from David in it.]

B) You could draw a line and switch to a David vignette. [He is in the library basement talking with the people.]

C) You could draw a line and switch to a Richard vignette. [He is on his way to room 228, heading into the dorm after having gone to the cafeteria for dinner.]

D) You could draw a line and switch to a vignette with a new character. (Do this only if you plan to introduce a new main character to the story for some reason.)

3.  Write the next two vignettes. (Cathy counts as one, if you continue with that one.). They may be as long or as short as they need to be, but note that longer vignettes are more effective at moving the plot of the story forward.
NOTE: Follow the standard format for typed papers, labeling the story as "Mystery Story" in the header.

4.  Email your two vignettes as a Word document (attachment) to my Markup address by Monday at noon.  DO NOT write more than two vignettes until I have read your first two and given you an okay to continue!

HW from 1/31/13

Due on 2/5/13:

* Josh C. - Please get your report card signed by a parent and return it to me as soon as possible.

* Choose your memory verse (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32).  Make a memory card (or equivalent) for the verse and bring it to class on Tuesday.

* Be ready to recite your memory verse whenever called on, which will be at random beginning on Tuesday.

* Continue working on your story, adding at least two pages per "homework day" between classes until it is done.  For example, if you have five pages done now, add two (or more) on Friday and two (or more) on Monday, for a total of four (or more) pages added between now and Tuesday.

NOTE: Once your story is logically finished in a way that is pleasing to you, you do not need to add any more pages.  (Duh!)  Your finished story must be more than 5 full pages but no more than 25 full pages when completed.  Refer to the grading rubric Evie gave you for information about how your story will be graded.

HW from 1/22/13

Due on 1/24/13:

Complete all work you have previously missed on the mystery story--in the order in which it was originally assigned--as quickly as possible!!

* On Thursday you will turn in G1 (G1=1st graded part of the story), which consists of the following--in reverse order from bottom to top--to be graded over the weekend:

- chart (or equivalent) of your plot line
- your first two vignettes, which you already turned in and got back with my comments on them
- the tan sheet, with my comments on it
- a good copy of what you've written so far on your mystery story (which at this point should be at least 2 full, double-spaced, typewritten pages)

* PLEASE NOTE all of the following:
+ Many of you turned this in yesterday.  If you did not turn in everything listed above for G1, please complete what you were missing and have it ready to turn in tomorrow.

+ You must use standard 12-point font (Times or Arial), standard 1-inch margins, standard paragraph indentions, and standard double-spacing for your paper. Do not attempt to meet the various length requirements as we go along by making the paper "look longer" by adjusting your margins, changing your font, increasing your font size, etc.

+ You are not required to write any more on your story for tomorrow than what is listed above for G1. However, if you want to write more--and you've been cleared on the tan sheet to continue--you may do so.

+ You may add, delete, or change things in your plan for your story at any time as you go along.

+ You are not "locked in" to what you originally put on your plot line chart.  That was just to assist you in thinking through and planning out your story.  Don't feel bound by it.

+ You may call, text, or email me any time with questions. If I don't respond right away, I will as soon as possible. Don't be afraid to try again if you don't hear from me in a timely fashion or if you're still confused.

+ I am available in the sanctuary or the kitchen every day after class (during lunch). Feel free to come see me for help.

+ Send me an email letting me know you read the "PLEASE NOTE" list above.

+ There is sickness in our community! Be careful to get plenty of sleep, to eat healthful food, to limit sugary foods and drinks, and to wash your hands often! We want you to stay healthy!!

* Write the next two scenarios. (Cathy counts as one, if you continue with that one.). They may be as long or as short as they need to be, but note that longer scenarios are more effective at moving the plot of the story forward.

* Follow the standard format for typed papers, labeling the story as "Mystery Story" in the header.
NOTE: Do not use a dotted line to indicate vignette changes. Use three asterisks instead.

* Email the two scenarios to me

ALSO:
Reading for Reading Log: 30 minutes daily. (Reading Log is usually due, signed by parent, at the end of the month.  This month it will be due on Thursday, January 31.)

HW from 1/10/13

Due on 1/15/13:

*Reread the start of the David story from first to last.  Be thinking about what you want your continuation of the plot to be.

* Brainstorm at least five reasonable possibilities of what you think the thing in his pocket could be.  (Remember, you are continuing the story, so it is whatever you say it is!)

* Brainstorm at least three different possible scenarios about what is going on in the story.  In each of the three scenarios (label each well) indicate (1) what he's involved in, (2)who the people or "creatures" are, (3) what his note said, and (4) what his plan is.
NOTE: These will be three totally different ideas about what's going on in the story.

* Look up the following literary terms (page numbers from your Writer's Inc. book are included) and copy the definition for each onto a piece of paper:
+ plot - p.239
+ exposition - p.235
+ rising action - p.240
+ climax - p.234
+ falling action - p.235
+ resolution/denouement - p.234, p.240

Decide if you and/or your family would like to take up the challenge to join my family in memorizing Romans 12--yes, the entire chapter--between now and the end of the quarter (January 17).  I will give you and extra 100 test grade when I average grades if you do so.

HW from 1/8/13

Due on 1/10/13:

* "Happy Birthday" to me!  Sorry to be late posting!  We had a delicious family breakfast prepared by my husband for all of us, and time got away from me!

* Finish reading the start of the mystery story we started in class on Tuesday.

* Make a chart showing the various characters and settings that are present in each line-separated vignette of the story.  For example:
+ David        office, field outside office, on the way to the library
+ Cathy        office, on the way home
 Etc.

Continue for each scene.  Note that you may have many listings each for David, Cathy, Richard, etc.  Just make a new, complete list item for each change of vignette.  If many people are in the vignette, list all of them.  If the vignette includes many settings, list all of them.

* Look up the following literary terms (page numbers from your Writer's Inc. book are included) and copy the definition for each onto a piece of paper:
+ foreshadowing - p.137, p.237
+ epiphany - p.235
+ suspense - look up in the dictionary
+ vignette - look up in dictionary or use link above

HW from 1/3/13

Due on 1/8/13:

* Complete the blank Essay Planning Worksheet for your season essay.  Be sure that your planning worksheet clearly defines each of your main points and supporting points as they appear in your essay.  (In other words, if your essay is already well-organized, you will easily be able to transfer the points to the worksheet as they currently appear.  If not, see NOTE below.)

NOTE: If your essay does NOT already follow proper 3-paragraph essay format (as evidenced by difficulty easily transferring your points from your essay to the Essay Planning Worksheet), complete the Essay Planning Worksheet and then revise your essay so that it is well-organized and matches your Essay Planning Worksheet.

* On Tuesday, you will turn in
(1) a final, beautiful, to-be-graded-for-the-final-grade copy of your essay (re-print it after revision)
(2) the Essay Planning Worksheet (which must match what is in that essay)
(3) all old copies of your essay, including the peer-edited one

Please put these items in the order listed above (top to bottom) and staple them together, ready to be turned in as soon as you get to class.

Decide if you and/or your family would like to take up the challenge to join my family in memorizing Romans 12--yes, the entire chapter--between now and the end of the quarter (January 17).  I will give you and extra 100 test grade when I average grades if you do so.
