HW from Thursday, 5/18/17

Due on AND BEFORE Tuesday, 5/23/17

1) Your Reading Log is due, signed by a parent, on Tuesday.

2) Be ready for a poetry quiz on Tuesday.

3) Commit your final memorization project (verse or four-stanza poem) to memory. Be ready to recite it on Tuesday.

4) Write in your journal (writer's notebook) daily for five minutes, just as you did for each writer's notebook entry when we did them in class. Your entries should be written in second person point of view, directed to God, using first person pronouns. Follow the example of Mark Rodriguez's entries if you need a model. You may write about anything you'd like—just write for five minutes, without stopping, using second person point of view. Be sure you have your writer's notebook in class each day.

-----
Also, daily:

Read your (approved) reading log book for pleasure, aiming for at least 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log calendar (in multiples of five, rounded down) as you go along.

Write in your gratitude journal daily, listing at least three things you are thankful for each day. When you have done so, place a small check mark in the top corner of your Reading Log calendar for that day.

Review one of your Scripture memory verses each day, such that you keep all of them fresh in your memory at all times and each verse gets reviewed at least once per week. You should be ready to recite any of the three verses you've memorized at any time.

NOTE: The May Reading Log will be due, signed by a parent, on Tuesday, 5/23/17.

HW from Tuesday, 5/16/17

Due on Thursday, 5/18/17

1) Be studying for our poetry quiz. Visit the review page from our class website using the links in the sidebar on the right of this Homework Blog page.

* At the top right, click on "Creative Writing Home Page."
* Once, there, scroll down to "Topics of Study, Quarter 4" on the left and click it.

Read the entire review list for Quarter 4. We did not study extensively about the different types of rhyme, but everything else is stuff you should recognize and know. Also, review the notes you took on poetry in class and the notes on the handouts I gave you.

2) Scan the rest of the poems on the page with the one we looked at in class today ("Animal Crackers"), determining the rhyme scheme and the meter of each. Write that information out on a sheet of paper, ready to turn in as you walk into class tomorrow.

3) Commit your final memorization project (verse or four-stanza poem) to memory. Be ready to recite it at any time.

4) Write in your journal (writer's notebook) daily—beginning today, Thursday, 5/11—for five minutes at a time, just as you did for each writer's notebook entry. Your entries should be written in second person point of view, directed to God, using first person pronouns. Follow the model of Mark Rodriguez's entries if you need a model. You may write about anything you'd like—just write for five minutes, without stopping, using second person point of view to God. Be sure you have your writer's notebook in class on Thursday.

HW from Thursday, 5/11/17

Due on AND BEFORE Tuesday, 5/16/17

1) Scan the poem "The Quarrel" on p.41 of your verse packet. Figure out the rhyme scheme and the meter of the poem. The first six lines of each stanza are one meter, and the final two lines of each stanza are another. Decide what you think they are and why you think the author chose to switch from one to the other at that point. Type this information up into a Word document (rhyme scheme, meter, and explanation as to why you think the author changed meter for the last lines of each stanza) and email it as an attachment both to MarkUp AND to my regular email as soon as possible.

2) Write your final opening verse essay. Each student will write an essay—even if you won't be delivering it to the class orally, it will be a written essay grade. I will email you another copy of the sample verse essay I wrote, in case you can't find yours. Follow the model, and choose a different verse than you've already used this year. You will turn this printed, typed essay in on Tuesday.

3) Write in your journal (writer's notebook) daily—beginning today, Thursday, 5/11—for five minutes at a time, just as you did for each writer's notebook entry. Your entries should be written in second person point of view, directed to God, using first person pronouns. Follow the model of Mark Rodriguez's entries if you need a model. You may write about anything you'd like—just write for five minutes, without stopping, using second person point of view to God.

4) Commit your final memorization project (verse or four-stanza poem) to memory. You will be reciting them next week.

5) Be studying for a poetry quiz next week. Review everything we've studied so far about poetry.

HW from Tuesday, 5/9/17

Due on Thursday, 5/11/17

1) Your well-proofed, corrected, complete draft (D3) of your theme story is due on Thursday. Please have it ready to turn in when you come into the classroom, with all previous drafts of the paper clipped beneath the beautiful printed D3.

2) For your final memorization project, you have a choice. If you chose to memorize another verse, begin committing the verse to memory. If you chose to memorize another poem (at least four stanzas) to memorize, email your poem selection to me for approval and print a copy to bring to class as well.

3) Scan the three remaining poems on the first sheet of your poetry packet. Mark the syllables in the first four lines of each poem as stressed and unstressed, then decide which meter you think the poem is written in. (Just figure out the rhythmic pattern and give that name. You don't have to figure out the number of feet in the line.) Also figure out the rhyme scheme, if there is one. Mark this information directly on your poetry packet and bring it with you to class tomorrow.
