HW from Thursday, 4/26/18

Due on AND BEFORE Tuesday, 5/1/18

1) Unless you have an approved extension and a new due date, you must finish your theme story before our next class meeting! It must be completely done—though not necessarily fully proofread and corrected—before Tuesday. You will not turn it in on Tuesday, but it must be finished and be in the editing process by then. Check here to see if I am aware of your story completion.

NOTE: Once you have completed your story, whenever that is, send me a text or an email letting me know that is complete and how many pages it is. You will then do a final proofread—and have your parent do one, too—before turning in your entire story packet with your proofed (by you and your parent) and corrected (by you, based on their suggestions) D1 on Thursday, May 3.

Again, the completed, proofread, corrected D1 of your theme story is due to me on Thursday, May 3.

(If you have an approved extension because of excused absences or extenuating circumstances, you will turn it in according to the schedule we worked out. If I have not yet spoken to your parent to work out an alternate schedule, you must have your parent call me ASAP to do so!)

2) Bring your printed copy of your memorization poem, which you checked against the website link and made sure there are no discrepancies.

You will recite these poems from memory on Tuesday, 5/8.

3) Your April Reading Log is due, signed by a parent, on Tuesday.

Impending Future Assignments
(These are for you to be aware of but not necessarily to complete yet. Work on finishing your story first!)

4) You will need to complete your final verse essay, which will be turned in the day you do the opening, if you are scheduled for another one. If you are not, it will be turned in on Thursday, 5/10.

5) Your final memorization poem will be the springboard poem you wrote about yourself. If you cannot locate your poem on your computer, contact me and I will make you a copy from the hard copy in your writing folder. You will recite these poems on Tuesday, 5/22.

-----

ALSO, DAILY:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes each day. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The April Reading Log will be due on Tuesday, 5/1/18.

+ Write in your journal each day (upside-down writer’s notebook entries), setting a timer for five minutes and writing in first/second person as we’ve practiced in class. Don’t forget to bring it back to class each Tuesday/Thursday!

+ Keep reviewing your four memorized Scripture memory verses (Titus 2:11-14, Ephesians 4:29-32, Philippians 4:4-8, 1 Chronicles 29:11-13).

+ Keep reviewing your memorized poem to be sure you are keeping it in your memory.

+ Make your bed!

NOTE: At any point during Quarter 4, if you choose to memorize and recite the poem "The Lamb" (by William Blake) perfectly from memory, I will give you an extra quiz grade in your average for the quarter. Let me know at the beginning of class once you have accomplished this, should you choose to do so.

HW from Tuesday, 4/24/18

Due on Thursday, 4/26/18

1) Make all corrections to your iambic poem that we worked on together in class. Type up the corrected poem in correct poetic form—use stanzas, but otherwise don’t double-space. Print a copy to bring to class on Thursday.

2) Check this entry to be sure you have the same form of your memory poem(s) as the one listed at the link. (Email me if you believe there is a discrepancy.) If your poem(s) appears here, it is approved and you may begin memorizing. If your poem does not appear here, I have not received it, and it is overdue. Contact me with your choice ASAP!

3) Print a correct copy of your poem(s) and bring to class on Thursday. You will recite these poems from memory on Tuesday, 5/8.

4) Continue working to finish your theme story. Unless it is finished in fewer pages, you should have at least 20 pages of the story written by the time you return to class on Thursday. If you do not have this many pages written, you must have a parent contact me to be sure you have permission to be running behind.See full theme paper schedule below.

5) Please proofread as you go along, and have your parents proofread it frequently as you go along, too, so you can have their feedback if your story needs help to have it make sense or be clear.

The first full draft of your story will need to be completed sometime in April. (It must be completely done—though not necessarily fully proofread and corrected—sometime before class on Tuesday, May 1, unless you have an approved extension).

Once your story is done, you will do a final proofread—and have your parent do one, too—before turning in your entire story packet with your proofed (by you and your parent), corrected (by you, based on their suggestions) D1 on Thursday, May 3.
Again, the completed, proofread, corrected D1 of your theme story is due to me no later than Thursday, May 3. (If you have an approved extension because of excused absences or extenuating circumstances, you will turn it in according to the schedule we worked out.)

NOTE: Once you have completed your story, whenever that is, send me a text or an email letting me know that is complete and how many pages it is.The next step after that will be to proofread it well—then print it and have a parent or other adult proofread it well, too—before it comes to me as your complete D1.

Since you will all finish your stories at different times, each of you will complete and turn in your D1 at a different time. (You will not turn in another copy of your paper to me until you turn in the completed, proofread D1.)

HW from Thursday, 4/19/18

Due on AND BEFORE Tuesday, 4/24/18

1) Finish the poem you wrote today in your writer’s notebook, if you didn’t finish it in class. The poem must be two stanzas long and written in iambic meter (S-L). (Read it in an exaggerated fashion, with unstressed followed by stressed syllables, to be sure it truly is iambic meter!)

2) Type it up in our proper form (DO skip lines this time) and email it to me at my Markup address ASAP. Send me a text or email at my regular email to let me know when you have done so. I will look for it to verify it was received. Do not consider this assignment complete until you have heard back from me!

3) Continue working to finish your theme story. Unless it is finished in fewer pages, you should try to have 20 pages of the story written by the time you return to class on Tuesday. See full schedule for completing the assignment below.

4) Please proofread as you go along, and have your parents proofread it frequently as you go along, too, so you can have their feedback if your story needs help to have it make sense or be clear.

The first full draft of your story will need to be completed sometime in April. (It must be completely done—though not necessarily fully proofread and corrected—sometime before class on Tuesday, May 1).

NOTE: Once you have completed your story, send me a text or an email letting me know that is complete and how many pages it is. The next step after that will be to proofread it well—then print it and have a parent or other adult proofread it well, too—before it comes to me as your complete D1.

Since you will all finish your stories at different times, each of you will complete and turn in your D1 at a different time. (You will not turn in another copy of your paper to me until you turn in the completed, proofread D1.)

5) Begin looking for the next poem you would like to memorize this year. The parameters will be identical to last time. (That is, it should be meaningful to you somehow and worth committing to memory; it must not be a song; it must be a published poem and you must know the author—i.e. it is not “anonymous” or “author unknown.”)

You may look in books of poetry you have at home or go check some at the library. You may also visit the following websites with links to poems.

NOTE: Not all poems at these sites have been reviewed by me, nor are they all guaranteed to be appropriate. Please do not visit these poetry links without your parent present with you. (You may also visit the links I gave you last time. These are some new ones.)

6) Email me your choice as soon as you have chosen it—in addition to the full text of the poem, include the title, the author, and the total word count. Each student must do a different poem, so it will be first-come, first-served with each poem. (See the separate entry on this homework blog to see your fellow students' choices. Do not choose a poem that already appears there!)

I will read over and approve the poem as soon as I receive your email. Do not begin memorizing until you have received approval from me. The sooner your poem is emailed to me, the sooner it will be approved and able to begin memorizing.

In addition to emailing me, you must print a copy and bring it to class next Tuesday, 4/24.

You will recite these poems from memory on Tuesday, 5/8.

Due on AND BEFORE Tuesday, 4/17/18

1) Be sure you have emailed me the first five (proofread!) pages of your theme story—as a Word or pdf attachment to my Markup email address—if you haven't already. They are due before 8:00 p.m. tonight (Thursday, 4/12).

2) Finish the sestina poem you started today in your writer's notebook. (Be sure to follow the pattern, which we discussed in class on Tuesday and reviewed today with the two new poems we studied.) You must have at least ten pages of the story written (unless it is finished in fewer) by the time you return to class next Tuesday. Please proofread as you go along, and have your parents proofread it frequently as you go along, too, so you can have their feedback if your story needs help to have it make sense or be clear.

HW from Tuesday, 4/10/18

Due on AND BEFORE Thursday, 4/12/18

1) If you haven’t already, make all corrections to the first page(s) of your theme story using the corrected “first page” draft I returned to you before spring break.

2) Complete five full pages of your theme story (including the corrected ones you wrote before—not five more), continuing with our correct standard format for margins and font size. Your story will not be finished at this time, so just name this draft “first five pages” and put the date of 4/12/18.

3) Proofread these pages carefully, making all corrections you find, then print the pages. Read over the printed pages, looking again for errors, before handing it to your parent (or another adult) to proofread. Have them mark their suggestions directly on the pages and sign to show that they proofread it well.

4) Make all suggested corrections to your draft, then save it and email it as an attachment to my Markup address. Those received before class on Thursday will receive extra credit in the grade book. They are due before 8:00 p.m. on Thursday night.

5) Resume your regular schedule of reading and writing in your journal (upside down writer’s notebook) each school day. Mark the minutes read on your reading log, and indicate that you wrote in your journal with a small check in the corner of the square for the day.

-----

ALSO, DAILY:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes each day. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The March Reading Log will be due on Thursday, 3/29/18.

+ Write in your journal each day (upside-down writer’s notebook entries), setting a timer for five minutes and writing in first/second person as we’ve practiced in class. Don’t forget to bring it back to class each Tuesday/Thursday!

+ Review your four memorized Scripture memory verses (Titus 2:11-14, Ephesians 4:29-32, Philippians 4:4-8, 1 Chronicles 29:11-13).

+ Review your memorized poem occasionally to be sure you are keeping it in your memory.

+ Make your bed!

NOTE: At any point during Quarter 4, if you choose to memorize and recite the following poem perfectly from memory, I will give you an extra quiz grade in your average for the quarter.

The Lamb, by William Blake

Little lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life and bid thee feed
By the stream and o'er the mead
Gave thee clothing of delight
Softest clothing wooly bright
Gave thee such a tender voice
Making all the vales rejoice!
         Little Lamb who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?

         Little lamb, I'll tell thee!
         Little lamb, I'll tell thee!
He is called by thy name
For he calls himself a Lamb
He is meek and he is mild
He became a little child
I a child, and thou a lamb
We are called by his name
         Little lamb, God bless thee!
         Little lamb, God bless thee!
