HW from Thursday, 4/19/18

Due on AND BEFORE Tuesday, 4/24/18

1) Finish the poem you wrote today in your writer’s notebook, if you didn’t finish it in class. The poem must be two stanzas long and written in iambic meter (S-L). (Read it in an exaggerated fashion, with unstressed followed by stressed syllables, to be sure it truly is iambic meter!)

2) Type it up in our proper form (DO skip lines this time) and email it to me at my Markup address ASAP. Send me a text or email at my regular email to let me know when you have done so. I will look for it to verify it was received. Do not consider this assignment complete until you have heard back from me!

3) Continue working to finish your theme story. Unless it is finished in fewer pages, you should try to have 20 pages of the story written by the time you return to class on Tuesday. See full schedule for completing the assignment below.

4) Please proofread as you go along, and have your parents proofread it frequently as you go along, too, so you can have their feedback if your story needs help to have it make sense or be clear.

The first full draft of your story will need to be completed sometime in April. (It must be completely done—though not necessarily fully proofread and corrected—sometime before class on Tuesday, May 1).

Once your story is done, you will do a final proofread—and have your parent do one, too—before turning in your entire story packet with your proofed (by you and your parent), corrected (by you, based on their suggestions) D1 on Thursday, May 3.

Again, the completed, proofread, corrected D1 of your theme story is due to me no later than Thursday, May 3.

NOTE: Once you have completed your story, send me a text or an email letting me know that is complete and how many pages it is. The next step after that will be to proofread it well—then print it and have a parent or other adult proofread it well, too—before it comes to me as your complete D1.

Since you will all finish your stories at different times, each of you will complete and turn in your D1 at a different time. (You will not turn in another copy of your paper to me until you turn in the completed, proofread D1.)

5) Begin looking for the next poem you would like to memorize this year. The parameters will be identical to last time. (That is, it should be meaningful to you somehow and worth committing to memory; it must not be a song; it must be a published poem and you must know the author—i.e. it is not “anonymous” or “author unknown.”)

You may look in books of poetry you have at home or go check some at the library. You may also visit the following websites with links to poems.

NOTE: Not all poems at these sites have been reviewed by me, nor are they all guaranteed to be appropriate. Please do not visit these poetry links without your parent present with you. (You may also visit the links I gave you last time. These are some new ones.)

6) Email me your choice as soon as you have chosen it—in addition to the full text of the poem, include the title, the author, and the total word count. Each student must do a different poem, so it will be first-come, first-served with each poem. (See the separate entry on this homework blog to see your fellow students' choices. Do not choose a poem that already appears there!)

I will read over and approve the poem as soon as I receive your email. Do not begin memorizing until you have received approval from me. The sooner your poem is emailed to me, the sooner it will be approved and able to begin memorizing.

In addition to emailing me, you must print a copy and bring it to class next Tuesday, 4/24.

You will recite these poems from memory on Tuesday, 5/8.

-----

ALSO, DAILY:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes each day. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The April Reading Log will be due on Tuesday, 5/1/18.

+ Write in your journal each day (upside-down writer’s notebook entries), setting a timer for five minutes and writing in first/second person as we’ve practiced in class. Don’t forget to bring it back to class each Tuesday/Thursday!

+ Keep reviewing your four memorized Scripture memory verses (Titus 2:11-14, Ephesians 4:29-32, Philippians 4:4-8, 1 Chronicles 29:11-13).

+ Keep reviewing your memorized poem to be sure you are keeping it in your memory.

+ Make your bed!

NOTE: At any point during Quarter 4, if you choose to memorize and recite the poem "The Lamb" (by William Blake) perfectly from memory, I will give you an extra quiz grade in your average for the quarter. Let me know at the beginning of class once you have accomplished this, should you choose to do so.
