HW from Thursday, 1/31/19

Due on Tuesday, 2/5/19

1) Continue memorizing your chosen Scripture memory verse (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32). It is now past due, and you should be ready to recite it at any time you are called on to do so. Keep practicing, to keep it firmly in your memory!

2) Make a memory card for your second Scripture memory verse—the other of the two (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32) that you haven’t already memorized for your first verse. Bring this card to class on Tuesday, and begin memorizing this verse immediately.

3) Make all suggested corrections and edits to the D1 of your mystery story that was returned today. Address all concerns marked on the paper and all concerns checked on the grading review sheet. Once you have fixed everything, you should continue with your story. Write at least four more full pages by Tuesday. (You have both Friday and Monday, which are school days, plus the weekend. If you can write more, please do!)

4) Read pages 50-72 in the Mark Rodriguez book. As you read, notice how the tone of Mark’s journaling changes and matures as he gets older. Write down as many different ways of journaling (styles of writing, points of view, subjects, etc.) that you can think of that Mark demonstrates in his writing. Be sure to have this list and the book with you in class on Tuesday.

NOTE: You may mark the minutes read for this assignment on your reading log, as we discussed yesterday in class. Mark it as a fractional number, with the first being the number of minutes you read in your regular Reading Log book and the second being the number of minutes in the Mark Rodriguez book. If you didn’t read in either one, mark it as zero. Examples: 15/30 (15 minutes regular book, 30 minutes MR book), 0/60 (no reading in regular book, an hour reading MR book), 45/0 (45 minutes in regular book, nothing in MR book).

-------

Also, daily:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure—or the Mark Rodriguez book—aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The February Reading Log is due on Thursday, February 28.

+ Continue to print out each homework blog entry, check off each assignment as you complete it, and have your parent sign the completed, printed sheet. Bring it to class each day.

* Write a second-person journal entry in your backwards writer’s notebook.

HW from Tuesday, 1/29/19

Due on Thursday, 1/31/19

1) Continue memorizing your chosen Scripture memory verse (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32). It is DUE to be recited on Thursday. Practice, practice, practice using the techniques on the handout we discussed! Be ready to recite it word perfect, with bold confidence.

2) Finish your name poem in your writer’s notebook. Make sure you like it.

3) Write a second-person journal entry in your “journal” (backwards writer’s notebook) each day. Check off that you have done so by putting a check mark next to the number on the calendar of your Reading Log.

4) Write a springboard poem, using the parameters demonstrated in the sample poem we looked at yesterday, entitled "I Am."

I am a romantic girl who loves to dream.
I see exotic lands on the other side of the world.
I hear waves crashing on a distant shore.
I see a setting sun and a rising moon.

I pretend to be someone else.
I feel the wind on my face; I stand in a golden meadow.
I touch the infinite sky as I soar with silver wings.
I worry that I will be trapped in this town forever.

I understand that I am a dreamer.
I dream of magical, fantasy worlds.
I try to hold on to this world of imagination.
I am a romantic girl who likes to dream.

For the springboard poem, the format is as follows:

* Each line is a complete sentence that ends with a period and starts with "I _________" (any present tense verb).
* It does NOT rhyme.
* It consists of three stanzas (poetry lines grouped together) of four lines each.
* The first and last lines of the poem are identical.
* The poem is written in first person. It is to be about you.

NOTE: Please title your poem "I Am" and have the first (and last) line begin with "I am a..."

5) Type out your poem. Print it. Proofread it. Have someone else proofread it. Make sure it follows all the correct parameters, and that you like it!

6) Print a corrected, beautiful draft and bring both drafts to turn in on Thursday.

7) Feel free to continue reading in the Mark Rodriguez book.

8) Your January Reading Log is due on Thursday.

HW from Thursday, 1/24/19

Due on Tuesday, 1/29/19

1) After thinking about and planning out what you ultimately want to happen in your mystery story, make a plot line diagram of all the major events in your plot. I would recommend making a numbered list first, then plotting it on the plot line. Use a sheet of plain computer paper to make your plot line diagram.

2) Read all of p.141 in your Writer's Inc. book—the sections entitled #4 ("Hooking Your Reader") and #5 ("Keeping the Reader Interested"), including the boxes containing the sections "Use sensory details," "Use specific action," and "Use dialogue."

3) Continue memorizing your chosen Scripture memory verse (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32). I will give extra credit to those who are ready to recite it next Tuesday, but it is DUE to be recited next Thursday, 1/31. Practice, practice, practice using the techniques on the handout we discussed! Do not put this off or you will not be able to recite it word perfect, with bold confidence.

4) Finish reading the introductory pages iThe Extraordinary Ordinary Life of Mark Rodriguez (henceforth called “the Mark Rodriguez book”). In your writer's notebook, as entry #2 for Quarter 3, write your thoughts and reactions after hearing of the events surrounding the night that Mark Rodriguez went home to be with the Lord.

5)  Read in the Mark Rodriguez book the prologue all the way to page 49. You may read more if you would like, but you should read through all of Part I (to page 49) before next Tuesday.

NOTE: Your story will not be complete at this point. You will just turn in the first five pages.

2) Continue memorizing your chosen Scripture memory verse (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32). I will give extra credit to those who are ready to recite it this Thursday or next Tuesday. HW from Thursday, 1/17/19

UPDATE, Monday, 9 a.m.
I have not heard back from the parent I was hoping could help me get set up with an alternate pdf-marking program on my iPad, and I can’t make sense enough of Google docs to keep track of everything well, so here’s my current plan: If you email me the pages you have completed at this point—by which I mean they’ve been written, proofread by a parent, and corrected by you before you send them to me ASAP (but no later than 3 p.m. today, Monday) I will proofread and mark them to return to you tomorrow. Whether you get that done in time for a “freebie” proofread or not, your official D1 (at least 5 full pages of the story) will be due on Thursday. This will be the first graded draft of your story.

NOTE: Your story does not need to be finished in those five pages. You will just need to have written five full pages, had them proofread and signed by a parent, and corrected them in time to turn them in on Thursday. Your story will be unfinished at the time of this first graded draft.

Feel free to call or text with any questions or concerns.

Happy writing!

From Thursday:
I am still wrestling and wrangling a bit with Google docs. I am also hopeful that we may have an option more similar to Markup, using a PDF-marking program on the iPad. I'm talking to someone about this now, and I will try to finalize exactly how we're going to handle continuing with the story as soon as I can.

In the meantime:

1) Continue in your story—alternating scenarios whenever you feel is appropriate—until you have written two full pages. Proofread it well, then have a parent proofread it and sign it. Make all of their suggested corrections, then await further instruction from me about where to send it and in what format.

2) Make a memory card for your chosen Scripture memory verse (Titus 2:11-14 or Ephesians 4:29-32). Once you have copied the verse, immediately have a parent double check it with you by having them check it as you read over the verse from the Bible and they cross check it with your card. Then switch. Then begin to memorize your verse using some of the techniques we discussed in class today.

Also, daily:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The January Reading Log is due on Thursday, January 31.

HW from Tuesday, 1/15/19

Due on Thursday, 1/17/19

1) Thursday is the end of the second quarter. Please be sure you bring me any items that are overdue and still need to be turned in! (Hint: If you gave me an excuse paper, you need to have completed it and turned it in after that.)

2) Make sure your notebook is in good order, with all the papers filed properly in the proper sections instead of shoved into the pockets. The only thing in your pockets should be the completed homework assignments you are waiting to turn in.

3) Make sure you have either shared your story document with me on Google docs OR that you have emailed the attachment to me and given me your gmail address so that I can open the document you sent me. I will share it back to you as a Google doc so you can fix it.

4) I will send your proofread paper via Google docs ASAP, for you to make corrections and continue. Please do NOT go ahead in your story until you’ve received back your first scenario with permission to continue.

5) Print your first meaningful verse essay and bring it to class on Thursday.

6) From the handout I gave you in class today, choose which of the two verses you would like to memorize.

7) Note the schedule for the verse openings below. (I have had to shuffle some names around, so you might be on a different week than you expected.)

HW from Thursday, 1/10/19

Due on Tuesday, 1/15/19

1) Only proceed to #2 after you have made the list of at least five possibilities for each of the following categories. (This list was due in class today, so hopefully you’ve already done it!)
* What is the thing in David's pocket?
* Who or what are the "creatures"?
* What are they up to?
* What was David's "discovery"?
* What does the letter to Cathy say?
* What will Richard do when he gets to Room 228 and David isn't there?

Put this list (which should consist of at least 30 things) safely into your notebook to turn in next Tuesday.

2) Using the list you made—in conjunction with the dreaming and scheming and brainstorming you did while completing your homework last night—type up a new list of those six questions above, but with the final choice you think you want to use for your story, for each question. (For example, what have you decided that the thing in David’s pocket will be, when you continue the story? Not just possibilities—tell what you have settled on.) Make a final decision for all six questions, type it up, and put this paper safely in your notebook, together with the list of 30 possibilites. These will both be turned in next Tuesday.

3) Hopefully as you’ve completed #1 and 2 above, you have developed some good idea about what you think is going on in the story and how you will continue it. You have a decision to make at this point: continue with the Cathy scenario, switch back to the David scenario, or switch back to the Richard scenario. (You may also opt to create a fourth scenario, with a new character, if you choose, but only if you have a good reason for doing so and a good idea of where you’re going with it.)

4) Open the document that I have created and sent to your email. Save this document on your computer as Laurie Sitterding mystery story (but use your name instead of mine). Continue your mystery story with the scenario you decided in #3 above.

NOTE: Only finish that one scenario. (Write no more than one page!)  Save and email this document to me as an attachment ASAP, before the weekend if at all possible.

5) In your Writer’s Inc book, look up “plot line” on p. 259. Make a large copy the graphic display that you see there (you may draw it by hand) and label each part carefully. Also look up each of the following terms in the “Literary Terms” section of your book and type up the definitions. You should also be prepared to turn this in next Tuesday.

* plot
* plot line
* exposition
* rising action
* climax
* falling action
* resolution (denouement)
* protagonist
* antagonist
* foreshadowing (p. 257 and p. 125)
