HW from 2/27/14

Due on Tuesday, 3/4/14

1.  Make any needed corrections as indicated on the graded copy of your gerund (3 -ing words) poem I gave you back in class on Thursday. Print a corrected copy (if yours wasn't perfect) and attach it to your graded copy.  (You will return it on Tuesday, for me to put in your writing folder.)  Please also email me a perfect copy so I can post it on the blog.

2.  Write three cinquain poems as directed on the handout I gave you. Be sure to write one of each kind.  You will turn it in on Tuesday.  Please have it hot-dog-bun style, labeled, and ready to turn in as you walk in to class Tuesday.

3.  Go to the blog and read your classmates' springboard poems ("I Am").  Decide which one you like best and send me an email telling me why.

4.  Get your notebook organized and in good order.  I will be giving you an open-notebook quiz on Tuesday--which will focus mainly on plot and poetry, but anything we've studied so far is fair game.  You will not be permitted to use your a Writers Inc book or your classmates during the open-notebook quiz, just your notebook.

5.  Your signed reading log for February is due Tuesday.  Begin keeping track of your March reading on the new log I gave you, starting Saturday, 3/1/14.

6.  Work on your Scripture memory and Scripture memory review.  You need to be ready to recite your first two (completed) memory verses perfectly from memory anytime I call on you in class beginning this Tuesday.

7.  Continue to work on your mystery story as indicated:  Once your D1 is graded and you have your red copy back, revise your D1 as indicated on your red copy into a perfect final draft (your D2).  You will turn in the D2 in as soon as it is ready.

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The February reading log is due, signed by a parent, on our next class, Tuesday, March 4.

+ Review daily the material from our writing and grammar lessons in class so that you can more easily learn and memorize (as we go along) the different things we are studying.  Be ready for a quiz anytime on all that we've learned so far.

HW from 2/18/14

Due on Thursday, 2/20/14

1.  Finish scanning (remember what that means!) the poems--which are actually verses of song lyrics--on the handout I gave you yesterday.  Give the rhyme scheme for all the poems appearing in the right-hand column.  Write the title of the poem (song) and the rhyme scheme on your own sheet of paper, calling this section I.  (NOTE: These are a little more difficult than those we did in class together.  That's okay.  Just give a new letter for each new rhyme and the same letter for the same rhyme, like we did in class.)

2.  Read the lesson at this website and then give the rhyme schemes for the four poems given at the bottom of the page.  Use the same sheet of paper you used for #1 above to give your answers.  Call this section II, and number them 1-4.  Again, write the title of the poem and the rhyme scheme.

3.  Go to this website.  (NOTE: You do not need to read the section at the top, "Examples of Rhyme Schemes."  That section has some tacky poems that I think the author thought were funny.  I do not agree.  Please disregard that section.)

Do read the information in the two sections "Rhyming Couplets" and "The Sonnet" at the lower half of the page.  When you are finished reading and studying the material, indicate on your homework paper (section III) what is the conventional (remember that word!) rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet.  (They will give this to you.  You don't have to figure it out for yourself.)

4.  Continue to work on your mystery story as indicated:  Once your D1 is graded and you have your red copy back, revise your D1 as indicated on your red copy into a perfect final draft (your D2).  You will turn the D2 in as soon as it is ready.

5Write your monthly blog post entry, which is due anytime during the month.  Please type it up, email it to me, and turn in a hard copy to me in class before the last day of the month.  You may write about anything you would like to.  Follow the directions on the sheet I gave you for the 12-Months-of-2014 Blog Challenge.  (See handout.)

6.  Work on your Scripture memory and Scripture memory review.  You need to be ready to recite any one of your completed memory verses perfectly from memory any time I call on you in class.  You need to be ready with your second memory verse by March 1.

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The February reading log is due, signed by a parent, on  Tuesday, March 4.

my regular email address.  I will print and grade this copy (your "red copy"), which you will
then (much later) revise into your D2.  Be sure that you have clearly labeled this as your D1,
in both the email and the document.  Then turn in your manilla envelope with all other
          components on Tuesday, 2/18.

    (3) If your D1 is not ready until after Sunday morning, print the perfect D1 copy and put it in
your manilla envelope with all the other components and give it to me in class next Tuesday.

indicated on your red copy into a perfect final draft (your D2).

4.  Make a Scripture memory card to use to memorize your second Scripture memory verse.  You will be required to recite the second verse aloud to the class whenever called upon, beginning in March.  You are responsible to review and memorize the first verse such that you can say it any time you are called upon.

5.  Bear in mind that you must turn in a February blog post entry sometime before the last day of February.  See the section for daily items, below, for details.

Also (daily):
