HW from Thursday, 10/19/17

Due ON AND BEFORE Tuesday, 10/24/17

1) Correctly punctuate the two remaining sentences (#5 and #6) from the handout we looked at together during class, entitled "Quotation Marks with Dialogue." Write the dialogues on your own sheet of paper, correctly punctuating each conversation.

2) Revisit the dialogue you composed and typed up for class today. Be sure you have everything correctly punctuated, incorporating all the rules we talked about today in class.

Guidelines:

* Your dialogue is edifying to read.

* There are at least three characters in the dialogue, and each person speaks at least twice.

* Your narrator has some interesting intervening commentary describing the characters or the scene.

* Your dialogue is correctly punctuated.

* Your Word document has our standard header—see sidebar for correct format—and is named “Dialogue.”

3) Email your dialogue to me as an attachment to my regular email address BEFORE THE WEEKEND. Be sure your name and the name of the assignment are on the subject line of the email.

4) Visit this blog post to read about the amazing power of the human brain to decipher and "fill in the gaps" when it is reading things that are riddled with errors. This is why it is so important to proofread things many times, and to have others look at your writing, too. Your brain can see right past the errors and read it as if there aren't any!

5) Read the following section in your Writer's Inc. book. Underline, highlight, or take notes as your read when something strikes you as important.

* "Using Strong, Colorful Words" (Pages 116-117—Read both pages entirely.)

6) If you have any writer's notebook entries to make up, please do so. You may call me for the topic(s) you missed. Set a timer and write for 5 minutes, just as we do in class.

NOTE: Do not forget to bring your writer's notebook back to class!

Also, daily:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The October Reading Log will be due on Tuesday, 10/31/17.

+ Make your bed! :)
