HW from Tuesday, 1/30/18

Due on Thursday, 2/1/18

1) Before you write anymore on your mystery story, make all suggested corrections!

NOTE: From this point forward, if I notice—while grading a draft of your paper—that you have ignored things I have already marked (either on Markup or on a paper draft), I will not grade your draft and it will be counted late until you get it corrected. I do not want to re-read and re-mark the same mistakes over and over again!

2) Continue with your mystery story. You should have at least four full pages. As always, you proofread them first, then have a parent or other adult proofread them and sign it. The edited draft you will turn in on Thursday will be called D3, and it will be graded over the weekend—using the grading rubric I gave you—for a letter grade.

3) Staple your D3 on top of the D2 packet I graded and returned today. You will turn this whole D3 stack in at the beginning of class on Thursday.

NOTE: The D3 is not a complete draft, of course. It is just the first four pages, saved as D3.

4) CWB, do not worry about the poem we didn’t complete in class. You will work on that later.

5) Your signed Reading Log is due Thursday.

-----
Also, daily:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The January Reading Log will be due on Thursday, 2/1/18.

+ Review your two memorized Scripture memory verses (Titus 2:11-14 and Ephesians 4:29-32).

-----

OPENING (oral presentation of Bible verse and prayer):

Please be ready to do the opening on any day! I will have your verse essay available for you.

HW from Thursday, 1/25/18

Due on AND BEFORE Tuesday, 1/30/18

1) I have emailed you a Word document. It is a correctly formatted skeleton for you to continue the mystery story and contains only the last Cathy scenario where you will pick up the story. When you receive it:

* Open the document on your computer.

* Change my name to yours in the header and select CWA or CWB as appropriate.

* Save the document onto your computer as Your Name Mystery D1.

2) Finish the Cathy scenario, either by writing more until that scenario is over or by putting the %%% centered on the page to signify that the Cathy scenario ends there. Either way, write one more complete scenario after the Cathy one, then save and email your document to me at my Markup address. Do this ASAP before the weekend. It will help if you also text me to tell me when you've sent it. I'll get it quicker that way.

NOTE: Don't forget to include an extra blank page at the end of your document for me to have room to make comments in Markup!

3) Wait for me to return your marked-up D1 to you and follow these instructions:

* Print out the marked-up copy of your D1.

* Make all suggested corrections to your D1.

* Follow any other instructions I give you about fixing the format of your story, if necessary. Do not continue writing more of your story until you have approval from me on Markup to do so.

* Once you’ve received approval to continue and have made all suggested corrections, re-save the document as D2. (Do this by choosing “Save As” and changing the title to Your Name Mystery D2) .

* Continue writing your story.  Once you have completed at least two full pages, read over them and proofread them yourself. Make sure you like them and they’re as “right” as you can make them.

* Print them out and have a parent or other adult proofread them for you. Have them mark their suggestions directly on your paper and sign it to signify that they proofread it.

* Make all suggested corrections (from your parent’s proofreading) then print your completed and corrected D2 (at least two full pages).

* Bring all of the following to class, stapled in order with the newest on top:

1. your printout of your marked-up D1 on the bottom
2. your proofread/signed copy of the D2 (at least two full pages) from your parent
3. your corrected/printed copy, with the corrected one stapled on top

You will turn this whole D2 stack in at the beginning of class on Tuesday.

NOTE: The D2 is not a complete draft, of course. It is just the first two pages, saved as D2.

HW from Tuesday, 1/23/18

Due on Thursday, 1/25/18

1) Following the form in your Writer’s Inc book—which you made a handwritten copy of for homework over the weekend—make a new graphic display of the plot line (see p. 259 if needed) which you will “fill in” with specifics from your version of the mystery story.

Your new plot line graphic should include labels of all five main components of a plot line, but in the space to the left “rising action,” list five or more specific incidents of rising action that you anticipate including in your story. At the top, list what you plan to have the climax of your story be. Also write several particulars that you anticipate including in the “falling action” and “denouement” to be sure your story has a satisfying conclusion with no “loose ends” and unanswered questions.

2) On the back of this completed graphic, write a 2-3 sentence “teaser” for your story (like what would appear on a book jacket to make you want to read it)

3) Complete your next opening verse essay, which you will turn in on Thursday.

-----
Also, daily:

+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30 minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the box each day. The January Reading Log will be due on Thursday, 2/1/18.

+ Make your bed! :)

HW from Thursday, 1/18/18 (Classes Canceled – Snow!)

Due on Tuesday, 1/23/18

Aurgh! I didn’t want to have another Snow Day today, but the Lord had other plans. I am confident He will show me how we should proceed and will give us the ability to finish everything on time. Just bear with me as I shuffle how this section of material is usually taught!

1) Only proceed to #2 after you have made the list of at least three possibilities for each of the following categories (which was due in class today, so hopefully you’ve already done it!):
* What is the thing in David's pocket?
* Who or what are the "creatures"?
* What are they up to?
* What was David's "discovery"?
* What does the letter to Cathy say?
* What will Richard do when he gets to Room 228 and David isn't there?

Put this list safely into your notebook to turn in next Tuesday.

2) Using the list you made–in conjunction with the dreaming and scheming and brainstorming you did while completing your homework–type up a new list of those six questions above, but with the final choice you think you want to use for your story, for each question. (For example, what have you decided that the thing in David’s pocket will be, when you continue the story? Not just possibilities—tell what you have settled on.) Make a final decision for all six questions, type it up, and email it to me at my regular address as soon as it is completed.

BE SURE YOU HAVE BOTH (1) YOUR NAME AND (2) THE TITLE OF THE ASSIGNMENT IN BOTH THE NAME OF YOUR DOCUMENT AND IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR EMAIL.

DO IT THIS WAY FROM NOW ON AND FOR ALWAYS!

3) In your Writer’s Inc book, look up plot line on p. 259. Make a large copy the graphic display that you see there (you may do it by hand) and label each part carefully. Also look up each of the following terms in the “Literary Terms” section of your book and type up the definitions.

* plot
* plot line
* exposition
* rising action
* climax
* falling action
* resolution (denouement)
* protagonist
* antagonist
* foreshadowing (p. 257 and p. 125)

Email this document to me at my regular email address as soon as it is completed. (See all caps above for formatting and don’t forget!)

4) Hopefully as you’ve completed #1, 2, and 3 above, you have developed some good idea about what you think is going on in story and how you will continue it. You have a decision to make at this point: continue with the Cathy scenario, switch back to the David scenario, or switch back to the Richard scenario. (You may also opt to create a fourth scenario, with a new character, if you choose, but only if you have a good reason for doing so and a good plan for where you’re going with it.) Once you’ve made your decision, text it to me to let me know.

5) Begin (or complete) your next opening verse essay. It will be due on next Thursday, 1/25.

6) Be sure you've completed the following assignments, from previous days:

à In your Writer’s Inc. book, read pages 85-98. Take notes about what you think is important.

à Read to page 130 in the Mark Rodriguez book.

à Bring both of your Scripture memory cards to class. Be prepared to recite both of your memory verses. Practice to get it word-perfect, with nice flow!
