Due on Tuesday, 3/13/18
1) Print out another copy of the poem you turned in today—“My
Evening Prayer” by Charles Gabriel with your third stanza added—and memorize
it. (You will be required to recite your own single stanza on Tuesday for a
homework grade. If you can recite the entire poem (his two stanzas plus your
one) word perfect, you will receive an extra quiz grade of 100 averaged into
your grade this quarter.
My Evening Prayer
By Charles Gabriel
If I have wounded any soul to-day,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way—
Good Lord, forgive!
If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I myself should suffer through the
strain—
Good Lord, forgive!
2) Type up your gerund poem, which I returned to you in
class today. Use the usual header for our papers. Make the poem center
justified rather than aligned left, and do not double-space. Email it to me at
my regular email address. Also print a copy to turn in on Tuesday.
3) Visit the following websites about literary theme.
Take notes as you read about the idea of a literary theme—what it is, how it
differs from the subject, some of the more common themes in literature, etc.
Read over the lists of themes given, thinking about which theme you might like
to include in your next story. Do not click
on any links contained on these web pages unless your parent is present with
you when you do so.
4) Locate the poem you would like to memorize
for your next memory assignment. It should be meaningful to you somehow and
worth committing to memory. It must be a published poem and you must know the
author (i.e. it is not “anonymous” or “author unknown”). It must not be a song.
You may look in books of poetry you have at home or go
check some at the library. You may visit the following websites with links to
poems. Not all poems at these sites have
been reviewed by me, nor are they all guaranteed to be appropriate. Please do
not visit these poetry links without your parent present.
NOTE: I have decided to change the grading scale I will
use for your poetry recitation. Referencing the small grading paper I gave you,
there will still be five categories, and the grades for each category will be
the same. However, instead of stanzas, the divisions will be based on word
count. Replace the former categories (1 stanza, 2 stanzas, etc.) with word
counts (40 words, 60 words, 80 words, 100 words, 120 words). You may reach the
word count with one poem or two, but they must each be approved by me before
you begin memorizing.
Once you have found your poem, please print a copy and
bring it to me on Tuesday. I will email you a copy of the revised grading sheet for your reference, but you do not need to print it and fill it out. Just bring your printed poem on
Tuesday, and you can complete the form then. Be sure you have the total word count, the author, the title of the poem, as well as the full text of the poem.
5) Be “dreaming and scheming” about your “theme” story. You
will soon be creating/determining the setting, characters, point of view, plot,
and theme (the message you want to convey to your audience). Your
finished story will need to fall between 10 and 25 pages. Please bear this in
mind as you plan.
6) Be prepared for your Scripture memory quiz on the
other two verses. It will be the same format as the one you took last week and
will come anytime.
-----
Also, daily:
+ Read your (approved) book for pleasure, aiming for 30
minutes daily. Mark the number of minutes on your Reading Log as you go
along—in multiples of five, rounded down—and have a parent initial it in the
box each day. The March Reading Log will be due on Thursday, 3/29/18.
+ Each day, review your four memorized Scripture memory
verses (Titus 2:11-14, Ephesians 4:29-32, Philippians 4:4-8, 1 Chronicles
29:11-13).
+ Make your bed!
-----
OPENING (oral presentation of Bible verse and prayer):
Please be ready to do the opening on any day! I will have
your verse essay available for
you.
