HW from Tuesday, 4/29/14

For Thursday, 5/1/14

1) Analyze ("scan") the poems on the two handouts you received yesterday. On a sheet of loose-leaf paper, number the items and, for each, write the title of the poem, give the rhyme scheme, and write the meter (both the rhythmic pattern and the number-based meter word, e.g. iambic tetrameter).  Have it hot-dog bun ready to turn in as you walk into class.

2) Your April reading log is due, signed, tomorrow. Also have it hot-dog bun ready to turn in as you walk into class.

3) If you haven't turned in a hard copy of your April blog post, have it hot-dog bun ready to turn in as you walk into class as well. (Email the blog post before Thursday to be on time.)

3) Be working on revising, correcting, proofreading, and perfecting your completed story.  If you have not received a Markup G2 from me, it is coming soon!  I am grading them as fast as I can in the order in which they were received.

UPDATE on your THEME STORIES:
Your completed, corrected, and proofread (again--by someone different) draft of your finished story will be printed and turned in on (or before) Tuesday, 5/6.  This will be your D1.  Please do not send your D1 to Markup or to my regular email!

The following items will need to be in your envelope with your perfect-as-you-can-make-it D1:
1) Preliminary planning worksheet for your theme story.
2) Plot line chart for your theme story.
3) Printed Markup of the initial homework assignment you turned in (first 3 paragraphs of story).
4) Printed Markup of your graded G1 (first 4 pages of your story).
5) Printed Markup of your graded G2 (first 10 pages of your story).
6) Beautiful, printed copy of your corrected, proofread, edited, corrected, perfected D1 (entire story).

Please place the items in your envelope in that order (from bottom to top) so that the first thing I see when I pull out the whole pile is your D1 on top, with your preliminary planning worksheet on the bottom.

EXTRA CREDIT for EARLY COMPLETION

In order to encourage you not to procrastinate or wait until the last minute, I will offer the following:
* Turn in your well-proofed, corrected D1 on next Tuesday, 4/29 +4 points to your D1 grade
* Turn in your well-proofed, corrected D1 on next Thursday, 5/1: +3 points to your D1 grade
* Turn in your well-proofed, corrected D1 on Tuesday, 5/6: no extra credit; that's when it's due!

Also (daily):

Work on your Scripture memory and review!  You need to be ready to recite any of the four completed memory verses perfectly from memory any time I call on you in class.

Bear in mind that your monthly blog post entry is due anytime during the month.  Please type it up, email it to me, and turn in a hard copy to me in class before the last day of the month.  You may write about anything you would like to.  Follow the directions on the sheet I gave you for the 12-Months-of-2014 Blog Challenge.  (See handout.)

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The March reading log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, May 1.

+ Review daily the material from our writing and grammar lessons in class so that you can more easily learn and memorize (as we go along) the different things we are studying.  Be ready for a quiz anytime on all that we've learned so far.

HW from Tuesday, 4/22/14

For Thursday, 4/24/14

1.  Poetry Recitation Party tomorrow during class.  Be ready to recite your poem, expressively, from memory.  Be good at it!  (Students who signed up to bring finger-food-only snacks--and the one who agreed to bring water bottles)--please remember to bring your snack and set it up as soon as possible before class starts!)
NOTE: Practice, practice practice reciting your memorized poem!!  You will not simply be evaluated on how solid your memorization is (as you were for your verses), but you will also be evaluated on your delivery of it.  How expressive were you?  Dynamic?  Interesting?  Practice reciting it slowly, with expression,  for your parents, your siblings, your friends, in front of the mirror, filming yourself and watching it, etc.  Don't let yourself feel goofy or silly or shy or embarrassed.  You can do this well!

2.  Finish your theme story (writing it, not editing or proofreading it) before class on ThursdayPlease send me an email at my regular email address to let me know when you have finished your story (D1) and are in the proofreading stage.  Do not send your D1 to me--not at Markup and not to my regular email!

Friday, April 18, 2014

HW from Thursday, 4/17/14

For Tuesday, 4/22/14

1.  Take a moment to consider the meaning of this day, Good Friday, and what happened on our behalf those many years ago.  Re-read the story from the Bible.  Enjoy the traditions your family has in place to commemorate the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Happy Easter weekend!

2.  Visit this website and watch the poetry recitations of the following four young students:

* Jackson Hille reciting "Forgetfulness"
* Sophia Elena Soberon reciting "Bilingual/Bilingue"
* Shawntay A. Henry reciting "Frederick Douglass"
* William Farley reciting "Danse Russe"

2.  Practice, practice practice reciting your memorized poem!! Just be good at it!

3.  If you did not read the link about the HSLDA poetry contest, do so now.  Read it in its entirety.  Click on the links contained there to listen to the songs that are to be the inspiration for the poem you are writing.

4.  Work on your poem.  Remember, for the contest, you are not allowed to receive any help on it, including proofreading or editing.  Take what you worked on yesterday in class and finish and perfect it.  Make sure it follows one of the permitted rhyme schemes.  Read it out loud.  How does it sound?  How does it flow?  Make it as perfect as you can, then type it up and print a copy to bring to class on Tuesday.

UPDATE on your THEME STORIES:
I am busily grading the G2s of your theme story (the G2 is the first 10 pages of your story) in the order I received them into Markup.  Once I return it to you, you will make the suggested edits and corrections, but for now, you should continue with your story toward completion even if you don't have your G2 back yet.  Remember, your story cannot be longer than 15 pages in the end.  You must have your story finished (but not proofread and corrected) by next Thursday, 4/24.  Please send me an email at my regular email address to let me know when you have finished your story (D1) and are in the proofreading stage.  Do not send your D1 to me--not at Markup and not to my regular email!

Your completed, corrected, and proofread (again!) (by someone else) draft of your finished story will be sent to Markup sometime between Tuesday, 4/29 and Thursday, 5/1.  This will be your D1.  Please do not send your D1 to Markup until after class on Tuesday, 4/29 (which is not next Tuesday)!

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The March reading log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, May 1.

HW from Tuesday, 4/15/14

For Thursday, 4/17/14

1.  Read over the handout you were given about the HSLDA poetry contest.  You DO NOT have to write the poem yet.  Just know that it's coming.  Your May blog post will be the poem you will write for this contest.  For now, just read about it.  And look up and listen to the referenced songs if you want to.

2.  Add the descriptive paragraph you wrote in class today to your story at a natural place that makes sense in the story, given what you're describing in the paragraph.  Feel free to modify it some, to make it flow better.  Put the classwork paragraph you wrote today in class in your theme story envelope with the other papers.

3.  Continue with your story.  Your G2 (first 10 pages) is due before class time Thursday.  (Note that if you turn it in before Wednesday you get 1 point of extra credit added to your G2 grade.)  They are graded and returned in the order they're received.

HW from 4/10/14

For Tuesday, 4/15/14

1.  Read the handout that I gave you about meter in poetry (front and back).  Read over the four poems that I gave you and decide what meter you think each of them has.  Give both the rhythmic pattern (iambic, trochaic, anapestic, or dactylic) and the number of feet you think it has (____-meter).  Write this information next to the poem on the handout, under the rhyme scheme you wrote.  Then make a paper to turn in with the title of the poem, the rhyme scheme, and the meter written out on it for each of the four poems.  Have this paper hot-dog bun style ready to turn in when you walk in the door or I will not take it and you will get a zero.

2.  Continue with your story as indicated below:

HW from 4/8/14

Due on Thursday, 4/10/14

1.  If you haven't yet turned in the G1 of your theme story, please do so ASAP.  (Ditto if you haven't returned your signed report card.)  It is now overdue if you didn't have a mercy extension for the Science Expo, and if you did, it is due before Thursday.

2.  Those who have turned your G1 in on Markup: As soon as you receive it back (I'm grading them as fast as I can!), make the suggested corrections.  In the meantime, continue with your story.  You must add pages to your story daily at a rate of at least two per school day between class periods.  [This puts you at six pages by Thursday and ten pages by next Tuesday, 4/15.]  DO NOT EMAIL ME YOUR STORY AGAIN UNTIL YOU'VE COMPLETED YOUR G2 (ten pages, due by next Tuesday).  Be sure to label your G2 at the top of your paper and in the subject line of your email to Markup and to change the date.

NOTE: Your completed theme story must be at least 5 full pages--i.e., it's at least moved onto page 6--but no longer than 15 pages.

2.  Be sure you are ready to recite your third memory verse.  All students should be prepared to recite any of the first three verses at any time and should be working on memorizing the fourth.

3.  Be memorizing the poem you selected.  I will be contacting you today if the poem you have selected is inappropriate for some reason.  (After I grade all of the G1s I will look over the poems.)

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The March reading log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, May 1.

You must write and proofread the first four pages of your theme story (your G1), then have a parent proofread them.  After you have incorporated their suggested corrections, email the corrected 4 pages (your G1) to Markup.  It is due before Tuesday.  The earlier you email these pages to my Markup, the sooner you will get them back.

NOTE: Please put the full name of the assignment in your header, and the correct current date, each time you send it to Markup. A sample header appears below:

Laurie Sitterding, 4/5/14
G1, theme story – forgiveness

2.  Be sure you are ready to recite your third memory verse.  All students should be prepared to recite any of the first three verses at any time, and should be working on memorizing the fourth.  Also be working on memorizing the poem you selected.

3.  Return your report card with both sheets signed by a parent.

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The March reading log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, May 1.

+ Work on your Scripture memory and Scripture memory review.  You need to be ready to recite any of your completed memory verses perfectly from memory any time I call on you in class.

+ Review daily the material from our writing and grammar lessons in class so that you can more easily learn and memorize (as we go along) the different things we are studying.  Be ready for a quiz anytime on all that we've learned so far.

HW from 4/1/14

Due on Thursday, 4/3/14

1.  Complete the plot line chart I gave you yesterday for your theme story.  Giving good detail, list the main events that you are planning to have in your rising action, what the climax of your story will be, and how you plan to wrap things up.  At the top of the sheet, write your name and the theme that you are planning to use for your story.

2.  Choose a poem to memorize and recite for the class.  Type (or cut and paste) the poem, along with the title and author, and print two copies--one to turn in and one to use while memorizing.
NOTE: Each stanza must be at least four lines long, and your poem must be the following length:
* 1 stanza: with the highest possible grade (for word-perfect recitation) being a 65 (D)
* 2 stanzas: with the highest possible grade (for word-perfect recitation) being a 75 (C)
* 3 stanzas: with the highest possible grade (for word-perfect recitation) being an 85 (B)
* 4 stanzas: with the highest possible grade (for word-perfect recitation) being a 95 (A)
* more than 4 stanzas: it will be possible to earn in excess of 100 (A+) for poems longer than 4 stanzas

3.  Please visit the following links and read the material found there before class tomorrow:
Rhythm in Poetry--The Basics
Looking and Rhythm and Meter in Poetry (page 2--the page that comes up when you click the link--only)
Examples of Meter in Poetry

4.  For those of you who sent three paragraphs to Markup: make the suggested corrections on your returned Markup document.  Continue in your story if you want, but you don't have to write any more in your story for Thursday.  The first four pages of your theme story (your G1) will be due next Tuesday, 4/8.

5.  For those of you who are late and haven't done the three paragraphs yet: do that assignment first (see 1-3 on yesterday's assignments) and wait to get the first Markup back before continuing.  Get caught up ASAP!

6.  Be sure you are ready to recite your third memory verse.  All students should be prepared to recite any of the first three verses at any time, and should be working on memorizing the fourth.

7.  Danielle, Emily: In addition to all other work listed above, you must revise your red copy of the mystery story into a completed, revised G2 and give it to me Thursday.  If you do not, you will receive a zero on your G2.

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The March reading log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, May 1.
