HW from Thursday, 4/17/14

For Tuesday, 4/22/14

1.  Take a moment to consider the meaning of this day, Good Friday, and what happened on our behalf those many years ago.  Re-read the story from the Bible.  Enjoy the traditions your family has in place to commemorate the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Happy Easter weekend!

2.  Visit this website and watch the poetry recitations of the following four young students:

* Jackson Hille reciting "Forgetfulness"
* Sophia Elena Soberon reciting "Bilingual/Bilingue"
* Shawntay A. Henry reciting "Frederick Douglass"
* William Farley reciting "Danse Russe"

2.  Practice, practice practice reciting your memorized poem!!  You will not simply be evaluated on how solid your memorization is (as you were for your verses), but you will also be evaluated on your delivery of it.  How expressive were you?  Dynamic?  Interesting?  Practice reciting it slowly, with expression,  for your parents, your siblings, your friends, in front of the mirror, filming yourself and watching it, etc.  Don't let yourself feel goofy or silly or shy or embarrassed.  Just be good at it!

3.  If you did not read the link about the HSLDA poetry contest, do so now.  Read it in its entirety.  Click on the links contained there to listen to the songs that are to be the inspiration for the poem you are writing.

4.  Work on your poem.  Remember, for the contest, you are not allowed to receive any help on it, including proofreading or editing.  Take what you worked on yesterday in class and finish and perfect it.  Make sure it follows one of the permitted rhyme schemes.  Read it out loud.  How does it sound?  How does it flow?  Make it as perfect as you can, then type it up and print a copy to bring to class on Tuesday.

UPDATE on your THEME STORIES:
I am busily grading the G2s of your theme story (the G2 is the first 10 pages of your story) in the order I received them into Markup.  Once I return it to you, you will make the suggested edits and corrections, but for now, you should continue with your story toward completion even if you don't have your G2 back yet.  Remember, your story cannot be longer than 15 pages in the end.  You must have your story finished (but not proofread and corrected) by next Thursday, 4/24.  Please send me an email at my regular email address to let me know when you have finished your story (D1) and are in the proofreading stage.  Do not send your D1 to me--not at Markup and not to my regular email!

Your completed, corrected, and proofread (again!) (by someone else) draft of your finished story will be sent to Markup sometime between Tuesday, 4/29 and Thursday, 5/1.  This will be your D1.  Please do not send your D1 to Markup until after class on Tuesday, 4/29 (which is not next Tuesday)!

Also (daily):

Read your (approved) book for pleasure 30 minutes daily.  Mark it on your reading log as you go along. The March reading log is due, signed by a parent, on Thursday, May 1.

Bear in mind that your monthly blog post entry is due anytime during the month.  Please type it up, email it to me, and turn in a hard copy to me in class before the last day of the month.  You may write about anything you would like to.  Follow the directions on the sheet I gave you for the 12-Months-of-2014 Blog Challenge.  (See handout.)

+ Work on your Scripture memory and Scripture memory review.  You need to be ready to recite any of the four completed memory verses perfectly from memory any time I call on you in class.

+ Review daily the material from our writing and grammar lessons in class so that you can more easily learn and memorize (as we go along) the different things we are studying.  Be ready for a quiz anytime on all that we've learned so far.
